AppGameKit Classic Chat / Background operation and Sleep / Wait in Game Loop

I haven't seen any examples that show sleep/wait in game loops. Is this possible in Tier 1? Is it possible to do something like a background operation with AppGameKit? So the user starts a multiplayer game, creates a network game, then puts the phone in their pocket and it notifies them when someone joins. Or later, the game is running but doesn't require any user interaction until someone else does something, then it alerts them that they need to do something. Ideally not consuming insane amount of battery while it is running or running in the background.

not possible in tier1 but the web server can send a notify to your handy i believe.
