Over the New Year break I decided to do a 24-hour game challenge. Game is pretty much complete, just needs a bit of polish. Really like how it turned out. Check it out.

Advanced Hacker
24 - Game Challenge


Advanced Hacker is a fast paced numbers game that requires guesswork and deduction to crack the pin number and hack the server. It's basically a Bulls & Cows game, but cooler.

JLMoondog, I haven't had the opportunity to try this for very long yet. But what I have found is that the number pad is very small, I am using a Samsung S4 (which is a pretty big phone to be fair) and I struggle to push the correct numbers...

Sorry it isn't much, I'll hopefully have a decent go later today... I love the graphics by the way, you are incredibly skilled in that department, all your apps look great!

I was afraid the buttons would be too small...

I've actually been developing and testing on a 10" tablet and PC. Since I've yet to be informed of any game breaking bugs, I'm going to release the game on tablet and PC. Than in the next few days, redo the GUI for a more friendly experience on mobile.

Thanks everyone! I've already made more in sales with this game in one week than I have made in ad revenue in the last 6 months with all my other free apps combined...

This is my first game for sale, more of a test to see how well I can do selling apps rather than relying on ads. I'm going to give it a while than build a free version with ads.

Interesting, thanks for sharing that info.
I have been suspecting as much, and have been deciding on which way to go. I was thinking no ads with 0.99 to 2.99 price range, depending on the app. It is nice to hear that a RAD app is selling well at your price.

So is the game just not fun? 10 people have bought the game and no one has played the actual game...or at least played enough to get a min score posted, which is 10..which is one server in 9 tries...There are two posted scores, but they are mine and my daughter's.

Just find it odd that no one who's bought the game has actually played it much. Sad. I promise to make an easier and much more fun game next.

I'd also like to add that my experience with Desura so far has been horrible...It's been almost two weeks since I submitted my game and it still says "awaiting approval"...not even an email update or anything stating that they're actually looking at it. Heck, even a rejection email would be nice!

I was offline on the computer I was playing with.
Just played a several few rounds connected and scored on the board easy enough, so I don't think it is too hard.
It is difficult though, but just enough to make you really think on your toes for 120 seconds.
I didn't like being in last place, so I had to tie your score.

Lol awesome. You think the time limit is fair? Currently it adds 20s every time you hack a server successfully, except in death mode. Think I should increase it? I'm about to release an update so you can change the controller size, make it easier for smaller screens. Can easily add that in too.

I wanted a backspace when I accidentally hit the wrong number.

The time limit is tight. Probably too tight for most brains.So, yeah, more time would definitely make it more playable for the critical-thinking challenged.
A score board for the unlimited time game would be nice too. (most people are probably playing that option)

I like it, but it may make some people too paranoid to try it just because of the nature of the game. (unauthorized entry hacking)
Maybe that is all just in my head. Just a thought anyway.

Lol, know what you mean. Sometimes if I'm having horrible luck or a brain fart on a pin and still have 3-4 guesses left, I'll just input random guesses as fast I can just to get a new server and fresh start.

I find this hilarious and a complement. I don't think there is any way to "hold the player's hand" and teach them the game. It's very easy to understand, it just takes actual thinking to play. I doubt they gave it a thorough test run, as not a single submission was ever sent in the last couple days..meaning no one on their team actually played the game. I plan to send a reply and get some more insight on their experience.

It's sad I was turned down, but honestly the game is hard because the actual game is difficult. It's based off a very old game that many people play. While building this game I've come to find out that one of two things happens with a player when playing the game, either they actually get it and are able to play or they never get it and could play hours upon days and never once understand what they're doing wrong.

It's also funny because this is an easier version of Fallout 3's hacking mini-game...

That is hilarious.
This is a prime example of ...

"If I have to explain it, then you wouldn't understand."

In other words, if you don't have enough common sense enough to figure this out, then an explanation will more than likely be beyond your understanding as well.

Confusing controls???!
Yeah, I guess a numeric keypad and an enter key can be a challenge for some.
That leaves me wondering how efficient their finance department is...good luck with the payouts.

At least I got a good laugh out of this though, and you should too dude.
The best advice I ever got was "ignore the idiots", and I think it applies here.
This version is difficult for the average person (but playable), but in the right circles (Mensa maybe) this could really be appreciated.
With 7 billion + people in the world, the top 2 or 3 % is a very large number.

Just dumb down a version and add a short power point type walk through for the 'numeric keypad challenged'.
And make a leaderboard for the untimed games, because they will never make it in 120 seconds.

The opposite of an experience I had. I once submitted a game to AppUp. It went through their "rigorous approval process" and was published. But my stats showed they never played it.
Once it was published, they played it a few weeks later and I was given an Intel "Enhanced for Core" badge.


It's a bad measure of a game that they are using. I love games where the first challenge is to work out how to play the game. In fact, that is my plan for my current project; you don't get any instructions, you have to work it out. It's an interesting study in Psychology - all mammals and birds (except cats) prefer to work things out for themselves and will choose this option over the easier one. That's probably why men don't read instruction manuals

LoL.. made me think of a review I got on Dungeon Odyssey.. the reviewer said it was a great game and it was fun to play.. but ended the article saying.. "but the graphics are a bit 'retro'" I think he meant it in a bad way, but since the guy I did the graphics for asked me to make it look 'Retro' I took it as a compliment.

It's like giving a person a lemon tart and they say it tastes too much like lemon.. erm, what did he/they think it would taste like? LOL

I take great pleasure in knowing critics for the most part have no idea what they are talking about..

Did you hear the movie critique? I went to see this fantasy movie and well, it wasn't very realistic! LOL

I could go on an on, but I need to protect my ribs from cracking..

Not sure about people like Desura, because I do not share their logic.
Let the user decide what he/she wants to play. (hence a feedback system to warn of crap)
Just because their tester can't understand the game play or controls doesn't mean the user will have the same problem.
The testers should be checking for bugs and offensive material, not what they think is good or bad game design.
Not everyone has the same skill set or game type preferences.
I bet their tester would find Call of Duty to have confusing controls too (or any game if the numeric keypad is a challenge), but thank the gods they didn't have the decision to release that series or not.

For me, I would walk away from them because you have other channels for PC distribution. (this is not advice for you, just what I would do)
I would even market it in a way that uses this company rejection to propel it, if I could.
A lot of people like banned stuff because of their desire for freedom and less restrictions in their life.
They don't want people telling them what is appropriate when they can decide for themselves. (sure this is not everybody just some)
This could be sold as '...the game that was deemed by distributors as too difficult for the general public to play...you decide'.
Maybe get some of the "oh yeah, well I'll show them" responses.
I wouldn't let Desura's refusal get me down or slow up my efforts.
I would treat it like MoJo and spin that crap right back on them.
You tell people they can't play, and watch how fast they try to prove you wrong.

I think I'm going to push that, as it's kinda hilarious and I think would grab people's attention.

I personally thought it was funny. I had 6 people test the game before publishing and not a single one had any difficulty figuring out controls or how to play the game. They probably saw the screenshots or thought the game looked boring so they gave it to the interns...blah

All in all, I'd give my experience with desura a 2 out of 5 star rating. Their communication with developer's is sadly lacking. I'm still going to try them again with Starvenger, so hopefully that's much more easier for them to "understand".

I didn't see it as lying. As a group of people (unless the company is one person, which I didn't assume) they would be distributors, plural.
Sure the company is one entity, but I was referring to their group of employees as being distributors. (to me they are, and I am including the testers)
And, they do release to the general public, so I take their answer in short as... 'this is too difficult for the general public'
So my phrase was an expression of my perception of their statement, not a direct quote from it.
Apologies for any confusion, but I had no intention to lie, just getting to the point to be brief without singling out any company in the statement. (no need for bad publicity)

I'm going to give Desura the benefit of the doubt this time. I don't mean to offend them or any developers who've been published on their site, but I've seen some really terrible games on there, I at least should have gotten on for being polished.

Oh well, moving on.

I find it hilarious that after 'twitting' and 'facebooking'(whatever the term is) about the situation with Desura, I've received 3 emails in the last 24 hours from publishers stating they'd publish my game.

Coming March 1, my game will be featured on FlexIndie and be apart of a "once a month pay what you want" model similar to Humble Bundle. Should be interesting.

The more marketplaces the better I say!

It's been nearly 10 months and I've made over 40 sales. I guess not too bad for not having much in the ways of advertising. I've decided to make it free!

Also!! No one has discovered the secret game mode, so I guess I'll have to reveal how to unlock it. Inserting into code snippets, so if you don't want to be spoiled, don't open.

Here comes the competition!

I have not tried to best my best, but I will try to stay on top, which will be a great challenge.
This is by far the hardest game I have played.

I must have overlooked something, because I didn't know I was supposed to be looking for a secret game mode.
I will try it though.

I think if you had advertised this (with the sales $ maybe) it would have taken off.

Did you enlarge the buttons on the Android version???
With large buttons to press instead of clicking, the mobile version could be better.
I would really like it if I could use my numeric keypad for input on the PC version. (pressing numbers instead of clicking with mouse)

I think this game could really take off if the input was friendlier, because the challenge level of the puzzle is great!!

Hey Conjured, I've actually started to work on part II, or sequel i guess for Advanced Hacker. I'm developing mainly for PC, and will port to mobile after. The new version will feature way better control scheme, and will feature several game modes, including multiplayer and 2-player same screen multiplayer. I'll also have a story mode where you must prove to be the greatest hacker in the world, while thwarting a world-wide plot!

Sounds great.
I am glad to see that you have plans for its further development.
Hopefully, the better controls will make it less difficult for those who couldn't hang with the first version.
