In Dark Basic Pro, there is an Execute File command - is there anything like that in AGK2?

No, because of security restrictions around mobile devices, and the same principles were applied to all platforms.

Now that AppGameKit has moved on considerably, it would be nice to have this as a Raw command for Windows, OS X and Linux.

There are lots of "shell" and "launcher" programs for Android. These apps have the ability to execute other programs. I use a couple of these.

So if there is some security issue, they get around it.

There are also lots of apps that can read and write to lots of areas on the device and on cloud services like DropBox.

I also would like to see the ability to launch other apps AND access the general file structure of the device AND access cloud services, in especially DropBox.

Access to DropBox would open up a whole host of capabilities.

I think we are starting to get side-tracked: Specifically, I'm looking for an AGK2 equivalent to the DBPro execute file command - I want to execute a command from the command line in Windows, and capture the output of that command.

There are two main Windows calls to do this: ShellExecute() and CreateProcess().

Easy to use in T2.

It is C++ - available in AGK.

Question is for T1, then. If I was using C++, I wouldn't need AGK.

I don't use T2, but I can see there are huge advantages to using C++ and AGK. You get all of the functionality wrapped up ready to use, without reinventing the wheel. Then you get the freedom of C++ too. The most successful AppGameKit user here (xGEKKO) uses this combination, and has made over 100 games.
