I thought exactly the same when I read the news. I'm guessing it's a Steam only thing again

I have absolutely no idea as it isn't even shown on the Steam page with the other bundles. Personally I am still holding off doing 3D in AppGameKit until they offer built-in support for shadows, which feels like something that should had been included from the onset to at least be marginally comparable to any other 3D-based game engine out there.

I doubt that will happen since you can do it with a shader.

Yeah, it's a programming language, not a game engine. If you want built in shadows, try GameGuru.

AGK bills itself as the "Easy + Instant Game Development Kit" and its target audience is not one that should be expected to dive into such low-level coding exercises as GLSL just to accommodate rudimentary shadows. I would be satisfied if any such shaders were bundled with AppGameKit along with the necessary source code, but to date I know of know such inclusions and even scouring these forums you will find not much on that front.

Last December Paul mentioned he planned to get to 3D shadows at some point, and this month Lee posted to the Steam forums that built-in shadows are "definitely on our short-list of things to do next for the 3D side of AGK." So TGC themselves have recognized the need for this and I look forward to the day it is implemented.

I'm definitely with xCept on this.
Ordinarily if something can be done by the coder then we should do it ourselves and leave Paul to concentrate on the other stuff but I think shaders is a different story. There should be some included with AppGameKit - shadows and bump being the two obvious ones that spring to mind.
