I've been doing more and more work with Visual Studio Code, the lightweight friend of the big Visual Studio. Works great for my web development, I've gotten C# to work and I've even got some syntax highlighting for AppGameKit code.

But I'm now looking into experimenting with C++ and getting syntax highlighting and intellisense is one thing. I also need a compiler. Does anybody know if it's possible to get Visual C++ compiler without Visual Studio? Or perhaps another one suitable for Windows development?

The tool chain used to be included in the Windows SDK but that is no longer the case.

www.codeblocks.org maybe ?
don't have any experience with it - just heard of it as a "lightweight" alternative
