Depends on your server. If you have MySQL and PHP support then you might want to try http://www.xmbforum.com/. If you only have PHP support then try http://www.phpbb.com/. Of if you don't have any and want a message board hosted elsewhere, there is always http://www.ezboard.com.

yuk,

phpBB is crap.

It is clumbsy and not at all workable!

I would suggest invasion, or yabbse or vBulletin.

Life would be a lot better for your hosting company if no-one used phpBB as it takes up soo much time/proccessor. I mean 0.8 to display a page is far too long when you think about large communities with 50+ hits per hour, then the peak times when 20 hits a minute, too long. Considering up to 150 websites can be hosted on one server, quite easily in fact.

Yes, but we're not talking about large communities and we're not talking about companies with $150 to spend on a personal forum. PHPBB is the only free alternative.

Although I do agree with you.

Oooh, you must mean Invision, forgot about them. Didn't know YABB had a free version either.

Anyone any constructive criticism about PHPbb? Reasonable products seem to get slated once they become popular, I don't see the issue. I installed it in 30 minutes, including customisation. Works perfectly.

yabbse faster than phpBB... for god sake behave Martyn, you and i both know that is total crap.

my suggestion would either be InvasionBoard, or OpenBB; both are very quick, secure and simple to edit.
however that said if you don't have a website capable of them, then there are quite a few free online boards you can use; just do a search

Die phpBB...

Bad code, not consistant or fluent.

Hardly readable.

Half-botech attempts are OOP and unused functions.

Way too many MYSQL calls, and too many MYSQL tables.

Terrible skin system and very slow and awkward interface.

But, its free so...
