Hey guys,

Writing this from my Bro's computer. He reported Diablo II and Age of Empires II stopped worked without apparent cause. Both games reported video errors. Since he only had Catalyst 3.9 and 3.10 was recently released, I decided to try my luck with an update. As I generally do, I ran the installers to make sure they detected the proper hardware before uninstalling the old ones. Strangely, the new driver didn't. Hardware acceleration was operational as the desktop was in 1024x768x32... I downloaded a 3.9 driver so I would have something to back up to if it still didn't work when I uninstalled. I didn't expect that the 3.9 driver would also fail! All the DiretX tests in DxDiag passed beforehand!

Well, now there's no hardware acceleration at all. Widows reports the display device as detected and w/o drivers, but none of the display drivers for this system detect the neccessary hardware. System is:

Windows XP (SP 1)
446MB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon

I'm really stumped on this one.

Thankee all...

This is VERY odd. The drivers are still uninstalled but he's switched the desktop to 1024x768x32 and can run Diablo II just fine. Very very odd ... I must get to the bottom of this...

Shame you cant take the video card out - oh well...
Anyway, you could remove everything to do with the video drivers, reset the machine and let XP detect the video driver, and try installing the drivers there. Re-install DX9.0b after that and see what happens.

I didn't feel like giving my brother my password ... or typing it in on his computer at all... trust is trust, but there's nothing amiss with being careful .

You've got problems then, mouse...
Just shows how addicted and paranoid some people are because of this forum.

Uh, what?

I mean come on, why in the world WOULD I trust my brother with my password? It's needless... always be careful where possible...
