Very Similiar to pong indeed. I've ditched my 2D side-scroller and started a new project.(as of today )

This Beta gives you

1v1 pong
A small environment to play your favorite game of PONG!
Impossible AI(yet to be improved )
First to 10 wins!

The final version will(may) include

-Powerups
-More detailed environment
-Possible story mode
-New Characters
-Won't be able to move wherever you want
-(Yes the matrix is suppose to be there, and will be explained in game)
-Menu screens

I believe the deadline is Dec. 31(Although Rich said he'd accept as late as Jan. 2 I believe)

Hope you enjoy this, although it's primitive you'll at least get a good few minutes of play.

Well, I got my handful of work done, now it's your turn to find some BuGS.

Please report system specs and any problems you may encounter.

not bad, the upkey/downkey thing is screwed up, so you move back when you press forward the ball doesn't really change direction/angle much so its not that challenging. also the collision was abit dodgy when the ball was hitting the left hand side of the your alien, although it may have been the camera angle fooling my eyes.it just needs something to liven it up abit really
i get 60fps which is the max limit anyways and it runs nice and smooth on pentium 4 1.6ghz, 256mb ram, geforce 2 ti. quite strange really, i started a pon g game yesterday aswell!

Thanks for testing Red_Eye.

As mentioned before, you won't be able to move up and down, for that was only implemented for testing purposes.(collision on the ball at different parts)

Yes, the collision is a bit dodgy and may need some cleanup. All the objects were using sphere collision, so I may have to change for a "more accurate" polygon collision system.

Glad to hear it runs smoothly.(As there's less than 2000 polygons on screen and 1 matrix, it better run at 60 FPS )

No matter what, at least I'll have something to enter, but I'll be tweaking this all day.

Keep an eye out for more screenshots as details are added.

Been working pretty hard today. Finally starting to turn into a game if you ask me.

-Added boundries for the ball.
-Cleared up some bugs
-Added flying saucer to envirment
-Added "Play it on alienware" Splashscreen
-Made a few extra character skins.(none included with newest release)
-Added basic menu for navigation
-Scoreboard now highlights what's going on
-Fixed upkey moving you back and downkey moving you forward
(In final version you will only move side to side, but forward and back are only included for testing purposes.
-Ball increases speed and turns the sides of the map

Final Version will include

-Story mode
-Other oppenents(SNEAK PEAK in the images folder for one of the uv maps to get an idea of the skin)
-New levels
-Additional environment effects(like the rocket and flying saucer)
-About Page
-Improved Collision(Still messing with this)

Here's the download, and of course more screenshots.

Any suggustions are always appreciated.

oooh me likey, collision seems to have improved alot.
One thing though... the ball phsics doesn't seem to be too accurate normally when a ball bounces off a surface with a constant speed it should go off at the same angle to the normal but on the other side.
like in the code box

but in your game i found it would hit the alien and then go back along the path(or a similar path) to the one it had just come down.
although it does follow the above rule against the matrix walls.
Good Luck

On the newest version(not uploaded as of yet) depending on if you hit the ball from the left or right it does effect the ball position much more dramtically for both players.

I'll upload another version today once I finish the menus and stuff.

Other Notes: Sadly the story mode has been cancelled as it caused more problems, and didn't work it's way into the game as I'd like.
New levels will be added as a substitue.

-Ability to Freeze the ball is now in effect when the ball is close -to you.

-More realistic physics have been applied

-Game now has sound

-2 new flyovers(missel and Large ship)during game.

-The matrix is now textured, and a stadium is in the works.

------------------------------------
I'll try to upload one more final version by today once I get the sounds working properly.(encountered one small bug)

[edit] Here's another screenshot to keep you busy.

My my have I come a long way.

The newest version of Super Alien Bash is now released. I'd consider it nearly 4/5 done, and with the new contest extension till Jan. 2, this could really turn out a game.

Still to come...
-Weather
-More fly by vechicles
-In game music(already loaded in exe. just needs to be tweaked)
-More advanced ball physics
-A stadium crowd

and that will do it folks, this will be as close as you get until the full version is released.

Enjoy!

nice one! it looks great now, after testing again i found a couple of things
1)If you hold down and a direction when the ball is near you eg. try to freeze it while moving your player, then the ball stops dead and just hangs in the air, its impossible to get it moving after that.
2)Collision with the cpu doesn't always seem accurate, especially right at the beginning when the ball is going straight to the other alien, it just goes through them and you win a point straight away, it happened a couple of other times aswell.
3)When you win and the camera goes to the cpu player to see him doing his dissappointed animation the camera points to the middle of the court not the alien, so if it loses on the edge of the court you can't see him
am i the only one testing this? its really rather good

I have to admit, I had very low expectations for this - I downloaded it and thought it was just a buggy version of pong.

But you have improved it a lot, If you can get all those little extras in (weather etc.) and make it look really professional then you could have a good chance.

Keep going, and good luck.

Thanks Chris

@ReD_eYe

1.) Still improving upon collision so you won't be able to ball freeze without that error. If it becomes too much a problem, maybe I could increase the collision radius temporarily(while ball is frozen, then go back to normal) to prevent errors.

2.) I know what the problem was for this one. Already fixed.

3.) Hmmm, the camera is suppose to be pointed to the middle, but I figured out the problem. I had the camera xrotating at a very slow rate instead of yrotating to give you a view of the stadium.

Thanks for all the great feedback red_eye.
