Is there a high-poly modeller out there? Like milkshape etc are all low-poly modellers but what if you want nice detailed models.

You could probebly do it in milkshape, but it wouldn't be as easy as let's say Truespace5.2,3dsmax,maya,lightwave,etc. Now, I'm not to familiar with milkshape, but if it has meshsmooth that might do the trick.

Otherwise, since I'm familiar with Truespace, it's rather simple with it. There's 4 ways you can make your characters higher poly.

1.) Quadralate
2.) triangulate
3.) Smooth
4.) Meshsmooth <---- This is the one that really makes it nice.

So basically, search around for any software I mentioned above or basically any modeler with meshsmooth should get the job done for you.

I like amapi 5 for nurb modelling then its decimation features are good to bring it down to lower polys if required.

Milkshape has the tools and now the polycounts
(can go upto 65k polys now which isn't too shabby, still not truely hi poly but still good)

you want the MeshSmooth tool
that said you'd be better off with a different modeller,
trueSpace / Cinema4D / Amapi3D they're pretty good middle of the road products.

only one i like is trueSpace, but alot of people seem to like C4D alot.

I'm familiar with triangulate and meshsmooth but what do the other two commands do exactly?

If you need just modeler and dont need good renders or textures you may try Wings3D and it will cost you nothing.

Quadralate, and smooth are just too ways to increase your polycount.

The first one, quadruples the number of faces per face.(So if you selected on face and hit quadralate, it'd become 4 small faces)

The second one smooth, does the same as Quadralate, just makes the model a little more rounded.
