hi,
I have a problem with computer and everytime I start it up I get an error message saying:
"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe'."

Now I'm not an expert but thats a canny problem right?

And whenever I try to open Anim8or the computer shuts down and restarts itself.

Can anyone tell me what to do or anything?

Thanx.

hello moto

Let me put it this way. I don't have system32.exe on my system either

Sounds like you may have some sort of trojan / virus

yeah I just had a virus but I thought I got rid of it?

Do you think not having System32.exe will be a problem and is it the cause of Anim8or crashing?

Thanx.

Hey the system32.exe error usually comes up when you're running Win XP and you don't do the updates. There's little chance that you can save your system without formatting and reinstalling. That being said, you can always plug your hard drive into another computer to backup, first.

I used to do tech support for HP desktops...

You wouldnt happen to be the same idiot that told my mom to do a non destructive system restore on her computer, would you? Because it wasn't non destructive, deleted everything but windows xp.

Some person at evesham sent me a bios update a week after getting a new pc that "wouldn't need windows rebuilding".

Guess what?

Seriously, guys, that system32.exe came up at tech support maybe 2 times out of every 3 calls just after Update 1 came out for XP. Technically it involves you shutting off the computer at the same time as Windows is accessing the hard drive. It messes up the file tables and crap.

Yeah, same with WIn ME, but if you can't start the Windows GUI, you can't easily do a system restore. You can, however, go to the Command Prompt from the XP disk, when you hit 'Repair', and do a manual system restore from commands. I haven't done the support for a year so I'm forgetting lots of stuff hehehe..

It's a virus If you have a os that doesn't require permission from ms to run a bakup/format/install is proberly the safest way.

Makes me glad I don't have to rely on hp tech support.

Updating your Windows XP OS is one of the three ways you can keep your computer safe, because they may have seen exploits in security and found ways to fix them.

There was a virus at one time called MSBlast and it infected computers with Windows XP that didn't have the most up-to-date OS. It was sceduled to electronically attack Microsoft's Windows help web site on August 16, 2003, but that's over now.

However, similar attacks may have been planned out by virus programmers and hackers, so make sure your computer's OS is up-to-date!

Also, not having Antivirus software is the #1 surefire way that a virus can infect your system. Newer Antivirus software like Norton AntiVirus 2003 and McAfee Security Center have Auto-Protect features that virus scan Word Documents, IM File Transfers, Outgoing E-Mail, and Internet Downloads, but performing full system scans once a week is the only way you can be sure that all viruses, trojan horses, and worms don't attack your computer.

By the way, I checked my system32 folder, and didn't find System32.exe, so it must have been faked.

Doh! I got totally confused! Sorry for the confusion, guys, but I was getting it mixed up with the "windows\system32\config\system" boot error. Ah well, so sue me! That was almost 2 years ago, and really, I couldn't give two sh!ts if you don't use HP tech support. I quit that job over a year ago.

I got SpyBot and it found a ton of stuff with dodgy privacy policy and things like it, so I clicked fix selected problems and now everything looks as if it's working,

Thanx for all your help.

BTW. I was using PC-Cillin as my anti-virus software.
