Hey, I need to find a way to animate a simple PacMan model I made by opening and closing his mouth. Do you know how I can do this? Is that too much to ask? If you want I'll show the model.

Firstly, wait longer than 2 hours for a reply. I saw your other post in the 3d canvas section of the forum, 2 hours later you're already bored with waiting!

Anyway... I'm not actually sure how to solve your problem - I can't think of a more akward thing to try and animate.

Ok, I've been trying to think of a simple way, but there isn't. My best suggestion is to use mesh deformation and actually use bones in your object, attach on of the end-nodes to the lower part of the jaw, and animate that bone going up and down.

Sorry... it just seems you've picked the most akward thing to animate.

or just have a sphere with a semi-transparent texture that you animate

adr, that sounds like the most sensible way. You could even add bones for the corners of the mouth and create smiling or frowning animations for level success and failure.

Animation control would be a simple play animation command when the Pac Guy is moving. This would be a good learning animation project for someone wanting to learn Milkshape 3D or some other tool.

This not as pretty as an animated model, but it works fine.
I used it for my 20 line compo thing a few months back.

Wait a min. You´re having trouble animating pac-man? Sorry if what I´m about to say is insulting but I´m pretty p$W·&d off with this Sticky Keys thing.
Pac-man is the easiest model in the world to animate!
Right. Now that I´ve got that out of the way. You take a sphere, cut it in half. Move one half in and out of the other. If the 2 halfs are alined well enough it should animate perfectly.

The reality is that two hemispheres that overlap can produce z-buffer problems and look ugly. The nicer looking solution is to either make an animated model or manipulate verts dynamically.

But if the pac-man model is seen from a top down view then you don´t notice it.

if it was seen from top down, you wouldn't see it animating...

I did actually think of the two hemispheres, but I disgarded the idea for the same reasons zircher gave.

The most striaghtforward method would be to use a 2D sprite, if we're honest. Sometimes 3D versions can look cooler, but they open a whole can of worms.
