without sounding cynical, Its partly my responsibility to warn people about throwing there games around for free to unknown vendors. A few years back a guy from amsterdam conned a few good authors into a shamozzle.

I can already see unauthorised use of larger game company logos.
Its up to the author tho what the final decision is.

Thanks for taking the time to warn people of the pitfalls out there. Not that this guy is a swindler, we just don't know and should be careful.

crystal interactive was it? ESC and I almost signed a contract with that guy.

Definatly don't be tempted by what you think is alot of money. Especially when its offered by someone willing to publish darkbasic games.

To give you an idea of costings, and anyone else intending to do this Banshee Studios charge £10-15k for exclusive use to our premium games and between £2-5k for mini games. A purchased premium game would be a fully polished Banshee game using our latest engine with gameplay of reasonable depth.

I do not know what DTA are offering, but I do know there are people out there willing to pay that for various non-mainstream projects.

We use a very simple protection method when sending out games not yet purchased to potential buyers, along with text warnings at startup we also put an execution limit per install. Date locking would be easy enough for most of us to add too. Whilst that can all be got around and cracked it would not work well for a released game.

You could also watermark the product similar to what the DBP trial does.

Thanks for the heads up everyone.

I think I'd rather publish any of my products myself anyway.

Ouch! Crystal/Xing was a horrible ripoff... poor Kingy and... darn, I can't recall the name anymore, but they made a game called Warrior's Dream/Mind. Both got ripped off.

"Secrets of the Game Business" by the Charles Media River series is a good read for anyone seeking a look on how publishing works.

Only about Half-way through, but the 4 or so sections on publishing really opened my eyes up a little.

Things the book stresses

1.) Publishers aren't the enemy
2.) Design Docs. don't get you publishing deals all the time.(Except for Sid Meier, etc.) You need a working model.
3.) Any Publishing Deal is not always a good Deal
4.) Publishers don't negotiate through e-mail all the time. They want to see you in person.

Well, for the other 6 and the "why" you'll have to buy the book.

There are only about 4-5 people on this forum whom I'd trust with my own work. All of which are established, and already sold commercial products.

I recall now...

Sad

I think he just never came back after finding out his game wasn't going to make him money after all... and he'd been so happy about publishing with Xing too... sigh.

I wouldn't want to be taken advantage of now would I?

But I'll list one for you.

The Teams I'm working with- Obviously if I'm working with them, I have some trust.

If I had a list of all the developers, I'd be able to more freely list though.

It defiantly doesn't look professional.
I would never sell a game to someone with this on their website.

I like the AS logo, first class. But the site uses a too smal font and I'm sitting here with a cheap old monitor and can hardly read what it says. Yeah, I'm gonna buy a new one but you should design a site so that people with bad monitors can use it without hurting their eyes.

Yeah the site is great apart from the really bad choice of text. It's not black, and it's not big!

If you have a "bad monitor" you should be aware of the following menu in Internet Explorer / Avant Browser and probably a comparable in Netscape.

Click the "View" menu
Click the "Text Size" option
Choose a size

Also holding down the ctrl key and scrolling the mousewheel changes the text size.

Since you are suggesting it then you should also be aware that it doesn't work on style sheets. It have no effect on the AS site

:-o, I can read it pretty fine, but if you guys can't read it then I'll size the font up when I have some spare time(what am I doing on the forums then? I need a brake once in a while )

Mussi: I wouldnt just size up the font. I would make the text slightly darker. Its legible as it is but not as quick to read as it could be. The text is a bit small too. I run at 1280x960

I'm currently on my laptop and now I can read it without getting a headache but yeah, more contrast and 1 or 2 px larger font. The menu buttons are the worst to read though. I would make the pure black and bold as they should be the easiest to read and spot.

I don't like messing up others design either nor should I have to. I guess it's a good feature but I almost never needs it.
