If I load 3ds and x objects in DB Pro I obtain gray or black objects, I have tryed to texture them with the relative DB Pro commands but they remain sadly gray or black.
What may be the broblem? What must I do?

What program(s) are you using to apply texture? Did you put the object and texture in the same directory?

First, did you UV Map your model? The model's texture wont wrap correctly (resulting in the whole model being colored the dominant color of the texture).

Second, did you load the texture and texture the model correctly? If you did, theres only two things I can say:

A) Your models normals are really screwed up...I cant comprehend how that can be though...

or

B) Your graphics card is displaying them improperly. Get your cards latest drivers and see if that helps.

If its not either...not sure what I can tell you.

Cheers,
Preston

I use Truespace and others 3D programs to apply texture, I do put object and texture in the same directory of course but the fact is, I have tryed also the tutorial "Making a simple FPS Game" explained in the User MANUAL, and the BSP World file for the game level loads correctly while the sky model, the enemy model and the gun model appear dark gray (not texturized); perhaps then it may be that my graphic card is displaying them improperly? As I have bought my computer only some months ago I shall ask in my computer shop if this
may be the case.
This seems to be the only problem with my copy of DarkBasic Pro but of course it is a serious problem and I thank you for your kind help in trying to detect the cause of this problem.

many thanks by Tosco

load image & texture object always works for me and make sure your direct x is still working because you might have to reload it.

What version of DBPro and Direct X are you using? Make sure you've got the latest drivers for your video card.

One thing that's not mentioned anywhere in the documentation is that for X and 3DS models textures need to be in .bmp format. If not, you'll most likely just get a grey or black object. Took me a while to figure this one out!

Slightly off-topic, but the documentation really lets DBP down; it can (apparently, at least) do all kinds of neat stuff, but the manual and online help is next to useless. The sample programs are also very poorly commented, making them less helpful than they could be. The spiral bound command reference was a nice touch but it's more of an aide-memoire, and the Beginners Guide is only useful as roach material as far as I can tell. Anyone fancy writing a proper manual?

Maybe you can get JPEGs to work, but try as I might I couldn't do it. However, trying again just now it appears to have mysteriously started working; how or why is anyone's guess. At this point, I give up and start banging my head against the wall!

BMP, TGA, and some bizzare one (PPM?) are the officially listed formats, IIRC. But, other engines commonly support the more popular image formats. I often use PNG textures since this gives me much better transparency and translucency control. Since DBP currently ignores the alpha property on colors, this is the only way to get reliable objects with mixed opaque, transparent, and translucent parts.
