Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a program that will let you extract models/textures from emulator roms... I'm working on a techdemo that I'd love to include some characters from some of my old N64 roms.

Maybe I'm just being waaaaay too hopeful, but it seems to me that there must be SOME way to pull them out into a usable format.

Thanks in advance.

Its possible, but almost impossible.

Its a lost cause.

*laughs* Yeah, you could use screenprint to capture textures if the camera angle was right, but then they would be very bad quality.

Huh? Run the roms through some emulator software like Mame. Hit <shift><print screen>. Who needs a camera?

Trying to get the images from a ROM will be nigh impossible because they probably do not exist in memory as conventional image files, just raw data.

DUH, obviously I didn't mean a real life camera. I mean the camera angle in the 3D scene that the texture is in! ie, positioning the view of a 1ps so that the wall is parralel.

Oh well...

I was hoping there was some program that could read the roms as binary files and pull out the models. It's *theoretically* possible, as an emulator SORTA does it...

There is a program that pulls out the media files on roms but I can't remember the name of the program.

I am the game and I want to play.

Shiny, you can apply the texture to a plane and point the plane at the camera. That will keep it parallel with respect to the viewer.

I couldn't find anything, but on a related note, I did find a tool that extracts sounds and bg music from n64 roms: http://thecpy.emulation64.com/thelastresort/pluginstools.htm#N64%20Tools

There's also a plugin/tool for one of the emulators on there to dump those lovely super-blurry tiled n64 textures

You might have some luck with PSX games, I had some tools that could convert PSX models (it's usually a standard format), and some stuff for converting images, textures, music, etc etc - I never did very much with it because I got a decent modelling package instead, and I no longer have any of that stuff (I don't think so anyway).

Look on google for PSX game customisation and hacking, some people like to mess with PSX games, add their own hacks and music, PSX's fairly easy crackability makes it a prime target for that sorta tomfoolery.

Ok, throw me a clue here. Isn't nearly everything on a game ROM a 2D image? I don't know of too many ancient games that used real 3D models and rendered them in real time.

Not directly from the ROM, no, but...

...some emulators allow you to dump VRML of the current "world" geometry, which you can then convert.

Sure - http://www.nemu.com/. Unfortunately the only tool I've found to convert VRML97 to anything sensible is part of a much larger package that has a 30 day trial then costs $300 - if anyone can find a solution to this I'd be very happy to hear about it. In addition, the texture/UV data and smoothing groups aren't included - I had to dump textures separately and tweak for some time to get Mario looking that good.

Zircher, have you read the title of this topic?

Have you noticed where it's posted?

He's asking for ideas for capturing 3D models from roms, like the N64 and the PSX - these models tend to be real low poly, making them great for DBC games if you can get them converted.

I guess I was focusing on the emulator ROM part and was thinking of old school arcade machines like those used in MAME. I never bought into the N64. I tend to disregard where something is posted because a lot of people don't seem to pay attention to that anyway.
