Does anyone know any software that is able to play VOB files from the hard drive?

powerdvd has the option to play them off the hard drive.

no probs, look down the bottom right of the control panel to see an option to do that. Ive started exploring backing up a few dvds i own and have good results with some freeware ive found.

I've been doing that for a while now. I can recommend DVDshrink as a good free encoder.
I use it all the time. The latest version allows you to burn with Nero if you have it on your hard drive.

yeah thats what im using as well as dvddecryptor
