switch off, or remove it? To switch it off means you right click on
the icon and then press exit.

Click Start and go to run. Type in msconfig & click ok. THe system configuration utility will appear. Click on the "Startup" tab at the top. Under the "Startup Item" column, scroll down until you find "MsnMsgr". Uncheck the box next to it. THe next time you restart your computer, it won't auto-run! Wee

or much simpler, run msn, go into tools then options and go to the tab "general" then uncheck the "Automatically run windows messenger when i log onto windows", that should do it, if not do thr above

do as HZence says... if you go into the admin panel and turn off the messenger service then you're turning on Windows NT 5.x's internal<->external messaging system.

the Messenger Service is what allows those pesky advertisers to bombard you with popup adverts. Service Pack 1.01 turns it off as default anyways.

if you turn messenger off in the options this will only affect 5.x/6.x not 4.x (particularly 4.7) which is Windows Messenger not MSN Messenger; confusing but one using .Net the other doesn't so they both run equal instances.

the only surefire way i've found sofar to stop it from booting up on startup is to actually rename the msmgr.exe in
-device[0]//program files//messenger//

as sometimes when you turn it off, Windows reactivates it again.
also giving it a dummy name will not stop it from booting up but will stop it logging on.

i truely cannot stand Windows Messenger 4.x ... they screwed around with it so much for XP it was pathetic.

Hmm I have a similar problem and I hope one of you can help

I have MSN 6.1 with Windows XP Professional. Now everything was going fine with only 6.1 logging on at start up. I then got a program called desktop sidebar which displayed a list of all inline contacts, very useful

Only problem is, the only way to get it to use MSN 6.1 over windows messenger is to uninstall Windows Messenger. I did that via control panel - but it still finds windows messenger instead of msn 6.1 and logs onto that instead. I've checked c:/program files/messenger and there's no msmgr.exe in there, any sure fire way of stopping it completely from running?
