2d will give you good experience and is a good way to hone your skills it is easy to make 2d games....well sort of but if you hop right into 3d you'll probably get lost and end up wasteing more time learning stuff you could have learned while making a 2d game.

I'v looked at that book at barns and noble and it had some nice stuff in there. But reading the accompanying manual helps alot too since like 20 pages of the manual for DBP have all the basic stuff and teach you how to use the basic commands. Helps alot once you read tutorials and stuff.

Are you getting DBP or DBC?

It's good practice just to change things in the Demo's that come with Dark Basic. One DB example has a cone, like a wirlwind, that bounces over a landscape. It's quite easy to change the cone for an aircraft, or Hovercraft, or car. Then you have made a simple flight sim, or driving game. Then you can easily add buildings to the landscape....or a snowman...lol! Then you can edit the texture on the car, or Plane to make it your own design. Like put your name on the car bonnet, or your avatar. Easy things that will teach you something new each time. Next make the plane fligh higher, faster, add engine sounds, move the camera to a new position, etc.

Yes, you can save an exe as a single file, or you can save an exe with the media in seperate folders.

get PRO right off the bat - you'll just end up buying it later anyway as dbc is, well, leaves much to be desired when compared to pro. Not to mention dbc is no longer supported or updated, where dbp still is...

your choice tho.

Start with TEXT! For like the first couple of days, until you understand data types and arrays (when i was learning i skipped this bit) then do 2D stuff (I also skipped this bit) then play with 3D(I started here)...........and I'm possibly the worsed coder ever. I've now had to go back and learn stuff I should have learned 3 years ago :S I suck

@ chris knott

i just read your 'first pong game' tutorial that you posted on necomers corner thingy and it was great even though i only understood half it.

But i think it was pincho made some good points of if you start off in 3D you will not learn valuable things that you would of learnt if you had of started in 2D. So have you got any reasons why to start in 3D.

and can you also answer do 3D objects all revolve around the Z axis?
