Is there anyone there who knows how to get a working animated object created in 3ds max 5 to be loaded and played in DBPRO? When I export it as a .X or .3ds from 3ds max, it is only 1K so I am obviously doing something seriously stupid

What kind of animation? 3ds doesn't support skeletal animation so if you're using skeletal animation, forget that. x does, but there are at least two x exporters for Max, so I'd need to know which one you're using. Generally most exporters like you to have nothing in the stack but the model ( which needs to be an editable mesh, not poly ) and Skin or Physique on top of that.

I use Ultimate Unwrap's 3dsMax exporter to get animated models out of Max because it's so much more stable and reliable than all the .x exporters I've used. Of course you need to own Ultimate Unwrap in order to use that, but I guess if you paid $3,000 for 3dsMax, another few bucks for UU ( which I consider to be one of the best pieces of software I own ) isn't much.

I am just hitting FILE, EXPORT, then choosing .X or .3DS format to save. This is obviously too simple as it results in a file of size 1k, which is too small to contain any animation data.
Someone mentioned exporter utilities. Any ideas as to what/where I can get these? (Apart from Ultimate Unwrap which I am investigating (thx to sybixsus). ?

The Pandasoft one :

The MS one is part of the DirectX SDK, but you may also be able to download it seperately. I can't find on the MSDN site, but it must be there, I'm probably just getting lost in the MS maze.

Thanks for the replies. I think I have found the reason. There is a well documented bug in xskinexp.dle which needs to be fixed and re-compiled (unless someone has the compiled version).

btw - I couldnt get pandasoft to export the animation either. It exports fine, but again, no animation. (Is this the same problem, or are there some options I have to select when exporting using Pandasoft exporter?

Panda works fine if you set it up like this:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/mrdarclyte/

You MUST have keyframe animation in your file or it won't export at all. You can use bones an mesh deformation like this without any problems.

Hope that helps
