I've recently begun work on a new action rpg game, and I'm planning to actually finish it.

This game (like some of my previous programs) has taken painstaking level design out of the question as it is based on randomly generated maps. This time i've developed a new system which creates random terrains (with hills, forests, lakes) and then makes little villages or towns around the map. I ave yet to add people and 'quest locations' but its all been planned in detail.

As for gameplay, it is an action rpg (no turn based battles here) in which you gather info from villagers as to the whereabouts of certain targets eg. new items, history documents (stories), bad guy bosses etc. Once the information has been gained the target is marked on your map for you to go after. The aim of the game is to complete tasks, gain new and cool titles from vilagers (eg. 'BattleLord', 'Blademaster', 'Silver Lion') and ultimately find the pieces of a lost legend about the 'Lionheart' a forgotten legion of warriors.

So far I've got the maps, play and camera control, sliding collision with .x models, enemy ai, battle system.

Take a look at the screens:

Looking Good! I like the models, are they from DM2? Might want to use set object smoothing on some of them though .

The player and enemies are from DarkMatter. I made the level objects myself, using some of las6's textures.

This is looking good. I wonder how it plays though. With battle system, you mean ala Final Fantasy? For I saw the Knight fight in the screenies by punching and kicking the enemies to death..

Looks very impressive, and those levels look varied for randomly generated maps , one thing I could comment on is that all the houses are the same, I think you should make 3-4 variations on the house to provide realism (verisimilitude, man that's a cool word ).

Trying is the first step towards faliure.

@mitchie: I'm using an action battle system (ala Zelda not FF) where you attack move, block ect in realtime.

@Hamish McHaggis: I have 2 variations of the houses at the moment, though I agree they look pretty similar. However, I plan to make several 'sets' of buildings in different architectural styles for variance between maps.

excellent screenshots!! This game looks really cool already- you seem to have a lot done already. what are you working on right now?

are you using a matrix or memblocks for yout terrain system? If you are using memblocks, you could add a pre-calculated shadow system to your random level generator. I think kevil posted an example of "lightmapping" a memblock matrix in realtime, you could add something like that to the load routine, and then all of your houses could cast shadows on the terrain- it would look beautiful!

keep us updated on this game's progress!!

It runs about 25-30 FPS at 1024x768x32 on my computer. But then, my computer is about 5 years old and takes 1/2 hour for a Battlefield 1942 map to load.

I'm sure the average computer nowadays will run it at 100+ fps. I may have to wait to get a new computer before fully finishing the game though. Just so I can perfect all of the settings etc.
