Hello,

I've been browsing through these forums lately, and I must say there have been a lot of good posts. Unfortunately I feel there are just as many bad ones!

Before posting your WIP, I suggest the following:

Try to have images available. It can be anything: screenshots, concept, etc. Just try to have it available, it will catch the reader's eye and draw them in.

Expanding on that, I personally don't count "screenshots" from the "opening sequence" or main menu as real screenshots. These things can be easily whipped up in paint or Photoshop, so even if they are legitimately from the game itself, it won't give you much credibility. I think what people are looking for are actual, in-game shots. If you don't have that, consider waiting.

Have some background to your project. If you've JUST thought of it THAT day, don't post and say "so what do you guys think of this idea?" Give it some time, develop the idea, and THEN post.

Everyone else, feel free to add to this.

i think screenshots should be nearly compulsory, if you aren't at a stage where you have screens to show, theres no point posting in the WIP board. also a small demo to download would be nice and a little avi clip of your game/prog in action

This made alot of people very angry and it has been widely regarded as a bad idea...

I've noticed from my own experience, as well as looking at other posts, that screenshots + demo + avi = lots of feedback.

also be realistic about the amount of feedback you are going to get. It you make *another* pong/breakout/space invaders game, you simply won't get that much feedback, no matter how many power-ups you add (well, maybe if you add a LOT ).

also, if you have to keep bumping your own post to get replys, it probably means your original post is missing one of the things mentioned above

One thing I just thought of. If you have an executable available (especially if it's a very large download), you must, must, MUST have screenshots! Giving your potential customers/users eye-candy will make them more likely to download the exe.

Use the [ img] tags, and make sure you show the screenshots ON THE FORUMS, don't just give links to pages that have them. When you actually have them in your post, I can guarantee your program will get more attention.

Yes defintely use the img tags. I rarely click on screenshot links and i guess a lot of other people skip over them too.

Thank you guys. This advice has been long over due, so it will be very helpful to future posters.

One thing I might like to add:
Make sure you have a sizable portion of your game complete before posting. I often notice people posting WIP WAY before its even much of a game or the work they have done is something most people could do in 1-2 hours.

I feel some *sticky* action coming

Yepp, couln't agree more. I usually don't bother about this board cause there are so many people venting their ideas. On LLRGT there's a project news board and a game programming board where we post stuff like that. If there's no screenshot I don't even bother reading the text. And it got to be a good screenshot as well, not a ball on a matrix etc. Work in progress does not mean ideas for games.

My head aches at the thought of it...

I agree with all this stuff, especially the part about not posting until you have the majority of the work done. Nobody wants to sit and read your "Great!" idea. Ideas are worth cheese, everybody has an idea, you need to work on it before it becomes a game.

hmmm... do i feel something sticky?

You know, when i see an old lady slip and fall on the side walk, my first instinct is to luagh, but then i think, what if i where an ant? and she fell on me, it just doesn't seem so funny anymore.

Basically WIP forum guidelines are:

- Work-in-progress implies that you have something to show: Screenshots or a demo will suffice. Source code is also acceptible within reason.
(Posting a sphere-on-a-matrix after 5 mins of work is both time-wasting and insulting to other forum users, and well lose you any respect - so don't)

(if this the screenshots/demos/src are on a linked website, that is acceptable)

- If you are posting a download larger than a couple of megs, post screenshots.

- If you want somewhere to show off concept art, post in the media forums

- If you want to form a team, post in team requests

- Any threads which are just team requests, story lines etc. etc. get locked and/or deleted.

Simple really

Will sticky something soon but only after I have spoken to Rich about a related matter.
