I am looking to make a 2D war strategy game, top down view with a scrolling worl. I have the combat routines down pretty well with a little tweaking needed. What I need is a good method for display, scrolling the map. Graphics are not my strong point so I am looking for a little guidance/direction. What methods would you recommend (matrix?) for the map routine. Links to tutorials or similar products would be appreciated.

Is it real time or turn based? Im making a turn based game and have got a movement system up and running. Its based on a waypoint system, ie you put down points and the currently selected unit walks along the line. Is this any use to you?

Its turn based. Absolutley would be of use to me. My pathfinding is mediocre at best. Also looking for ways to implement the map. Been playing with a tile system that seems to be pretty good but was wondering if I should use a matrix. Not familiar with them yet, will look into them over the upcoming weekend.

thanks

Yes, Im pretty much at the same point as you, Ill post up all the code Ive done so far later on. I have an image for a background at the moment but that needs to be a map, so Im gonna have to learn how to do the map thing! Im probably gonna use x man`s map maker to make the map with but Ive not started on that whole thing yet.

Where can I get x-mans map maker. Would be helpful as well. Also, do you know of any sites with good bitmap images,. like water, grass, hills, mountains, forest....I am artistically inept.

This is the .zip for the map editor. I had trouble with his java links, but I managed to get it by typing in the address that came up at the bottom when I put my mouse over the java applett on his site, and it worked fine. If you have anyproblems, I can probably email it to you(my email is on my profile). As for tiles, Im gonna make a shed load of them, but not for several months, so camt help you there. Try just cutting up some picyres into tiles or something. Im sure there must be plenty of sprite sites as well if you search....

Thanks for the links. Was just researching DB (Haven't done any real programming in it yet) and found out their are no items like list boxes, combo boxes and other windows items. Really bummed, may have to use Blitz to do what I want to do. Any thoughts?

Again, thanks for the help, appreciate it.

Jake007, I emailed a set of my programs to you for my 2d turnbased game. to the email in your profile. The sets of programs include a homing missile routine and the trigonometry base to it all, and a little flag sprite routine!

Just to chip in, for VirMin I used a script based system to describe the game setup. As part of that, I load map sections on the fly so I can create anything from one huge map sheet to maps based on a mosaic of transparent sections.

You can catch of a screen shot of that here:

If you all have any questions, I'll try to field them. I'm a long time war game and RPG fan and I've written my fair share of books and utilities for wargaming (battle engine, tactical and strategic rules, PBEM game aids, etc.)

No, I'm not looking to join any teams, but I do like helping folks when we have similar interests.

Ok, Underlord, if you want it email me at my profile email and Ill send it on to you. Its basically a program that I wrote that takes 2 points and moves a sprite betwwen them, pointing it in the right direction(its DBpro Im afraid), but Ive got it updating the positions every cycle so it homes in on the target. Its a very veritile piece of code!

To follow up Jake007's post/quote...

Take a look at all the games out there that use a windows interface for their game. You'll only find a handful (I can only think of one, Metal Marines.) Most developers write their own GUI to match their game. You just have to do some design work and figure out how you want to handle those events. DBP has commands for file management and IO, you just need to apply them.
