Hi,
Does any one know of good (or even bad) level designing and texturing tutorials? I'm not talking about BSP levels. I'm talking about 3d scenes where your character can walk around.

-Edit-

Out door scenes like a desert, or a praerie or a canyon. Anything really

Take care

Read up on the matrix commands in the help file and check out the example games like L-type which I think uses a matrix for the terrain.

i think the best way to go about it first would probably be to get some reference pics of the environments you are looking to make. Realism or the lack of it is the most noticable feature if a map is made badly or is at least to plain : see how it works in real life then apply it to your game where applicable.

@Zircher: Thanks, I know all about matrixes but I've had it with them. I want to use x files for my levels.

@Gir: That's a good advice. I'll try to bear that in mind, but what I was looking for is tutorials on how to do low polygon levels that looked good. I'm not that good a modeller/texturer so I need to be told how to do these things step by step.

Thanks guys.

Ok, maybe this code will provide an interesting starting point. It's a random mesh generator. No 3D tools needed. If you change it to use fractals, you can reduce a level down to a single seed value.

Umm.. if you're looking for that level designing tool you can use totalterrain its free and really good
You can import 3D objects like buildings and your characters can walk around on them.

Uhhh...hold on a sec soganatsu. I think you're talking about MagicWorld, it's made by the same guy. MagicWorld is great, but the only problem is it uses matrices.

Total Terrain is free, but doesn't have features like importing objects, exporting .x, etc. It DOES, however, make much smoother terrain than possible with a matrix. So if you can get a heightmap reader like the ones available for Milkshape3d, then I recommend getting those and Total Terrain and you'llhave nice smooth maps that run fine in DB.

Thanks for the help, guys. But I don't want matrixes nor terrains. I wanted some basic tutorials on how to model (in a modelling package - preferably 3dsmax) scenes for use as .x models in my games. I've searched all over the web and couldn't find any so I take they probably don't exist. I'll have to take my chances with my own current expertize (or lack thereof) with 3dsmax

I find that working with heightmaps you don't have 100% of control on how you world becomes. Thanks again.

Ah 3d Max! I must have not paid enough attention to your earlier posts. I don't know about 3d Max specifically, but gmax has some nice little tutorials in it that cover some game-content modelling techniques. Try browsing the help files.
