Ive been thinking about this alot for a while and i think im on to something. when you go to a site in your browser, a signal is sent to your isp and then to some sort of central computer which has a list of where all the website are located at. right? well all hosts require you to pay money if you want a .com,.org,.net domain etc...
this would lead me to believe that these companies need to pay some money to the company that has the central computer to get the domain listed. however, .tk domains are FREE so this leads me to believe that all domains are actually free and hosting companies are just greedy. so? anyone got any ideas on how to get a free .com?

Suggest you read the various docs at http://www.dot.tk

It explains why service is free and the various terms and conditions for having a .tk web. I did not know they cut you off if you don't have 25 visitors in a 90 day period.

Boo!

Doug - .com domain names cost money for two reasons (1) they don't automatically register themselves, there is administration involved (or the development costs of a backend system to cover) and you therefor pay for this service/time. And also (2) it costs money to run a nameserver (especially with regard to the bandwidth costs).

Nothing in this world is truly free.

What about apples? Apples are free if you own an apple tree.

I may add that in 1998 I had my own .com adress under NameZero for free, so I didn't pay anything for it, I just had to do a banner on the site and not those annoying popups and so on.
Isn't there anybody offering .com for free ?

Lets hope hackers won't *peep* up your "central computer"

It's more likely to be a giant network than a central p1 133mhz

indi, i meant internal domains inside your intranetwork, like just your computers and router and servers and such, if you own the network you can do whatever you please inside the network

sell off your own domains and space.

judgeing from the speed I thought the net DID have a central PII 133mhz PC running things, wasn`t that on an episode of Dilbert?, found in a lost cubicle or something?

seriously I heard of a university who found their main server walled up in an alcove and had been running fine for years, they only found out it was physicaly lost when they tried to upgrade the network to optical, ran Linux IIRC

I found a loop hole to getting your own free .com, .gov, .org or any other extension(even a made up one) page.

first go to this web site http://www.netfirms.com/
click the "free web hosting link" and create any web page you want. Now this web site is very limited as to what it allows you to do, it wont even allow you to use HTML!

So once you have made your web site, go to this site:
http://www.50megs.com/
and go to the free link. Then it gives you three options
1. make a web site, but you have to pay for it.
2. create a free sub-domain name.
3. domain transfer.
select option three to transfer the web domain you made with the first web site, and that should do it.
