After quite a bit of work I finally have reached a point where my first major project is ready for public viewing. While still a beta, this Chip 8 emulator is able to run well enough that it's playable. The download includes the emulator as well as an assortment of freely distributable Chip 8 program files to use with it.

Comments appreciated and suggestions welcome.

From the DarkChip8 Readme
"Chip 8 isn't an actual console or computer system. It's a language interpreter from the late 1970's and is also used on some calculators such as the HP48 which used it's own version of the interpreter."

If you've ever played that "snake" game on your cell phone or calculator that's what Chip 8 can do.

Also if anyone is having difficulty running the emulator please check the readme file included. I will be posting a compatability guide later today that will contain controls for each game and also any problems that can affect playability.

There's a new version of the emulator available here.

DarkChip8
Version 0.6 Beta
http://www.geocities.com/kvanza/darkchip8.htm

If you've already downloaded the initial version please replace it with this new version which fixes some serious crashes and some graphic problems. Also increased speed this release as well

As promised there is also a compatability list included which describes the games, controls, and any problems there may be.

Enjoy!

Another day... Another update!

DarkChip8 0.7 Beta now up at the usual place.

This version includes Sound emulation. So now you can umm.. hear the ball bounce in pong and stuff... Yay!

Also, you can now reset the emulator and even stop emulation to choose another game without having to quit and relaunch the program. Still working on that built-in font support though... Anyways, you can now enjoy hearing the "awesome" Chip 8 audio.

Also if you want to contact me by e-mail with any questions, comments, or suggestions my e-mail address is included in the documentation (Read the readme )

Now... back to coding... it's a hard habit to kick

DarkChip8 0.7.5 Beta is now up and ready to go!!

http://www.geocities.com/kvanza/darkchip8.htm

The biggest change this release...

SPEED!!!

I changed the drawing routines to only update changes to the screen rather than redrawing it every pass... This should make all games run full speed (Blinky used to run 50% speed before on my computer now it's up to 100%)

Another beta release (and moving ever closer to that magical 1.0 too!)
There is only 1 game that is completely unplayable (Blitz) and 1 with major problems (Tetris).

Dark Basic Version 0.8 Beta
http://www.geocities.com/kvanza/darkchip8.htm

Here's a rundown of what's new this time around.

* Fixed a problem which prevented the menu from displaying when resetting the emulator.

* Changed the drawing routine again to only sync when there is time do so. Should clear up any speed issues now.

* Sound and delaytimers now use Dark Basics timer command to be accurate to the nearest millisecond.

* Fixed an issue which caused the display not to refresh when needed if waiting for key.

* When waiting for key press the emulator will actually wait for a key press instead of continuing if a key is already held down.

* Implemented the built-in CHIP 8 font (finally!).

* These games are now playable due to font implementation
15PUZZLE
PUZZLE
SYZYGY

* These games now display score or other text previously missing
