3 Dimensional Chat / Wings 3D not reading .3ds files

I downloaded some files from 3DCafe.com and I tried to open them in Wings (version- 0.98.17f) they do not open, but they work perfectly in JTEdit. Is there some plugin or upgrade I need to see the files?
I zoom in and out and look about and press select all objects but Wings just tells me that there are no objects even though I just loaded them. So does anyone know anything that could help me?
