For me the best game ever is Gothic 2 or Silent Hill 2

the reasons:

Gothic 2: the Gothic trilogy (that's what it's going to be) is like a dream come to truth for me:

Gothic 2 is a huge real time RPG with hundreds of quests over 6 hours of very cool dialogs (not only written, also recorded with very good voices), absolutely cool story, much freedom, very nice designed towns, forests, farms etc. and some cool enemies!!! I just like the American/European RPG style much more than the Japanese RPGs, because in a game like Gothic 2 you have really much more freedom than in any Final Fantasy, the story isn't that exaggerated (much smarter ), the dialogs are much better and there aren't those dumb love stories !
In my opinion Gothic 2 is still the best game from German (i know Far Cry has better graphix but the gameplay isn't as good as Gothic 2)

Silent Hill 2: Well, I have to say Silent Hill 2 has the best story I've ever seen in a video game!! Actually i never thought that hard about any story. I now played the game though the 4th time but still have to think about that story and i still don't completely understand it. You actually experience all the the nightmares James Sunderland comes through, a man who lost his wife and now is in danger to become completely insane...
and this is so perfectly made that even yourself nearly drive crazy at the end...
lol I'm not too good at English to explain that all but i hope you understand me (you must have played this game to understand me tho )

Anyway these are my favourites, maybe have a look at them I hardly recommend both!

Perfect Dark for N64 or Metroid Prime for GC. Half-Life was also prety good.

But damn i also feel very notalgic when i remember any of my old ZX Spectrum games.

The size and detail of the world in Morrowind blew me away, but I found it the opposite of addictive. I realised after about 30 mins of play that the whole game was very shallow because of the way you interact with people. The quests were shoddy, and there was a generic conversation template.

Even though it's a beautiful world, the actual roleplaying elements suck, in my opinion. Feels totally soulless, and once you realise that, it's really hard to enjoy.

Well, my favorite game with out any doubt is Shenmue II. The way the story and action got better and more intensive as the game went on was incredable. It´s not to everyones tastes though. It´s a real shame there´re not making a Shenmue III but I´ll get over it...eventually.

What do you guys think is the best all around game/software company?
I would have to say Ubisoft. Of course, I have been proved an idiot, many times .

You've got good taste.

I'd have to say that Elder Scrolls 3 is the richest RPG game I've ever played. The Balders Gate, Ice Wind Dale, Torment, and Temple of Elemental Evil were also very good RPG's. It would be too hard for me to pick just one game.

I took a look at Balder's Gate. Didn't look very impressive. Even Skies of arcadia looked better. I'm not much of a fan for RPGs. The only ones
I've beaten is Postal2 (which doesn't really count) and Pokemon Yellow.
Now I look back and wonder how I even got pokemon yellow as I never
liked that game anyway. I think it came free with the GB...

Can I see a demo now? [edit]Disregard, I saw the demo.

Maybe Tapewormz you should have a look at Gothic or Gothic 2. I know they aren't as big as Morrowind, but after I've played Morrowind i have to say that i prefer the Gothic series.
Again the reasons:

Gothic 2 has a smaller world of course but with MUCH more atmosphere! Everything looks much more "alive", the dialogs are not just much better, they also all sound, the story... well Gothic 1 has a very good story but Morrowind certainly has also a great story i just think the are both cool in a different way...
Then what makes Gothic so great: the Gothic series has in my opinion the BEST quest design ever. You'll never meet any cooler quests. All those bring anything to anyone doesn't exist in Gothic. All the quests can be made in different ways and there's always some way to "cheat" the problem! For example you have to proof the someones guilty and you can do that in many ways... also with money

Anyway i talk too much
But really, you can't know everything about RPGs b4 you've played Gothic...
(Hoping Fable is going in "Gothic direction"!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I've always been a fan of Raven Software, particularly for their work on games like Soldier of Fortune and Jedi Knight. Then there's also Remedy, the finnish creators of Max Payne which is also a truley awesome game.
