google are curently developing a web based email server which will have 1 gig of space for each user and its free. im wondering how on earth they are to get enought space for it. anyway the site is [href]www.gmail.com[/href]

Even if they give everybody 1GB, I doubt the majority of people will use more than 5-10MB, *if* that. That is how they will do it. If they get 5 million users who each have 1GB in their inbox, they will no longer be able to support it! Then again, they have practically cached the entire public Internet, which is absolutely amazing, so I could be wrong.

Companies will pay a high price to have their ads shown on google's site because 90% of users choose google as their search engine which means that's a whole lot of people seeing those banners. This means they should easily be able to afford the HDD space, especially of the display ads in the email client as well (not really a problem though, hotmail does it).

But google is the best im going to get this Gmail, they say there
going to have programs to look through are Gmails to give use adds
dipinding on whats typed in are Gmail. I wouldent care if some program
looks at my Gmail.

Think about it like this - the Google search index is held in MEMORY. When you run a search on their site, it doesn't happen across a hard drive, it's purely served from RAM. Thousands of banks of it.

Now think how much memory you must need for something like that and you'll realise that disk space is small fry in comparison. 1GB of emails - that'd compress massively if they wanted to.

Apparently the ads will come in the form of hyperlinked words in the mail. For example, if your mail contains the words "3D Game", they could be hyperlinked to the TGC website.

People are concerned that this means Google are prying into your mails. But then, isn't any ISP / mail service that includes spam and virus filtering? (including Hotmail!)

This is scary stuff. I don't appreciate *any* 3rd party reading MY email. That's just bogus. I haven't used Hotmail in four years because their EULA says they can read your email without permission and even SELL your business ideas if they find them in your emails, without giving you compensation! If you don't believe me about their EULA, read it yourself!

Now I can imagine Google will be a little more responsible, but I'm not one to put it past them.

The only 3rd party that can read my email is the NSA, and I'm okay with that. I live in Canada so I'm not sure if it goes through them. They're just checking for terrorist talk, anyways.

that's one of the reasons I never discuss anything in hotmail, except stuff between friends, I use hotmail for messenger and receiving files from friends

personally, I get a lot of spam, so, naturally, I have to empty it everyday, after not checking it for two months I had 6kb though, nowhere near 1 gb

Yeah but what they can do is match you infomation when you signed up for the gMail and what you search for... and then, they wont give it but if asked, will hand it over to the Law Enforcement... so clear your search filter!

Well, in my opinion, if you want something for free. you HAVE to expect some sort of advertising, be it from tagging stuff on end of your incoming and outgoing messages or taking a peek at your messages for customized adverts.

Gone are the days of the net giving stuff away for nothing. It just isn't commercially viable.

If you don't want any of this, just go and buy a domain for a few quid a month and be safe in the knowledge that noone will be looking at your messages and everything as advert free.

Get over it.

there probably is a way to create one on your own computer though...

Read about this about a month ago. Even if it does have the tacky ad system (a worrying trend in Google recently) I'm stil trying to get david@gmail.com - I just hope I get there soon enough!
