Ok, this is really pissing me off, stupid piece of crap computer
I have windows XP installed (finally) as a dual boot w/ Win98. Both on seperate drives of course.
I have tried formatting and re-installing twice :S
Heres my problem: After a couple weeks, Internet Explorer 6 slows right down. I mean websites load slow, images hardly load at all, it's annoying. I have a friekin cable connection, and even when all the comps on the network are off, this one goes slower than a 14.4!
Eventually it gets to the point I can't go on the internet at all!
But Outlook express and such are unnaffected!
I've tried restoring, clearing the offline/temp data, cookies, etc. Nothing works!

HELP!!!

Hmm... hows you're desktop operations?
If they're slow then i think i know what it is

Oh and try installing IE6 within Win98 - might sound a lil insane, but sometimes XP has trouble figuring out which Program Files its suppose to be useing.

Nope, everything is fine except IE. The funny thing is, disabling and enabling the network connection in the control panel seems to fix it.. we'll see how long this lasts.

BTW-WinXP is on a seperate drive as Win98...

yeah i know their on seperate Drives, but Win98 is on C: right?
WinXP's defualt setting is for the C: drive, bugs in the stupid system...
Its probably trying to search for IE over the network using the controls from Win98 - try updating to SP1, which might take a good hour. Even on fast connections Microsofts servers suck speedwise...

You could always use MSNE for some reason although its essentially IE6 it works differently. Much easier for keeping up with alot of things, because you can customise the side bar objects. Favourites and Email are also easier to jump between.

MSNE Is so pwetty... I also find it to be more stable, tho it should be based on the same tech! Go figure!

I'm guessing you've checked how much space is allocated for temporary files and its not that clogging it up?

I agree that if Win98 is on c:, XP will keep checking c:\Program Files for things. Its a STUPID STUPID point for Microsoft 2 have over looked grr but Mozilla's best anyways

Hope u get your problem fixed

I like MSNE in the beginning, but it is too heavy for computers ( I have a 2GHZ, so if I'm saying it's heavy, it's heavy...gheheh ). It's pretty useful with a nice interface if used together with MSN Messanger. But it's too much Microsoft, and they need to be boycut a little Now I use Mozilla as Browser and Gaim as Messanger for both Linux and Windows

well i've use Messenger since 0.82 so i'm not gonna change now its the only one i actually like alot.

unless i'm gonna video and voice, then I use Yahoo!Pager
all of the rest are just ugly and hard to get on with, but i've been using messenger much longer than anything except AIM so lol i dunno.

Microsoft Explorer (6.x) is literally IE6 in sheeps clothing, just alot of pretty shortcuts... Its actually there because they were told after XP they're not allowed to package IE hehee (yup yet another waste of the tax payers money on court cases that solve bugger all!)
I've used that since it was released 2years ago, even on my slower Cyrix 200+ it actually runs reasonably fast ... i guess on a dial-up connection it never shows much.

Only gripe i have with it, is every 30|40 links it'll just hang for a min because they've not optimised the cache properly yet. So you'll be sitting there watching the bar slowly go up - and for something that was designed for use with XP in the first place it actually has alot more bugs on it hahaa

I have that too... but its very very buggy for connections under 256kb/s
And it has a tendancy to just drop the channel alot.
If i voice ingame i'll use the ingame voice system cause most are much better.

But I very rarly voice ingame, most of the time i see no point cause no one ever bloody listens - might as well shout at the computer its more likely to do as its told.

Voice and Video over Yahoo! is quite sweet, cause even on my pathetic 56k connection i can have 5videos running at 320x240@5fps (oki not super speed but good enough) and around 20 voices all at once. (^_^)
Oftenly doesn't lag either for such a busy server

Ya, my friend suggested mozilla, so I'll give it a try. But for now IE seems to be holding out... I guess the fix is to reset my network connection.

And no, there are no files piled up, I just cleared it all out.

LOL, I remember I once went to help someone learn how to use their comp. I couldn't figure out why there hard-drive was near full, till I saw that the temp fileswere over 7 gigs. His son had been looking at a LOT of porn. Good thing for the son this guy wasn't there when I found it...

I like mozzila, but mozila don't like me

I develop websites, so i have to make sure it works on the mozilla platform (Netscape etc.) and the number of hours i have spent re-writing some little piece of JAVA!

The Outside is a evil place to be, too much light, too much noise and too many distractions....
I went outside once and my FPS rate dropped to 5.

hehee... (^_^) still think that IE is the best overall, even if it is by mircosoft easiest, most compatible, and seems to like Windows

Well, I think IE is still more compatible, all thanks to all homepages out there using Dreamweaver with loads of layout tables :S. But I will stick with Mozilla and make sure the pages I create are compatible. I really dislike MS too much so... I'm using less and less windows... As soon as I fix my final Linux issues, once I'm a n00b at it, and get a really good winemu, I won't be much around with MS... I'm even thinking about get a MAC

There are several exploits in IE, the problem is that the flaws list is growing (blame the hackers) and Microsoft is having a hard time trying to patch all bugs. WinXP SP1 fixes most problems internal to WinXP but does not address security issues fully (there's a IE service pack released after WinXP SP1). I too have noticed my broadband speeds fall from 80k/sec to about 40-60k/sec and WinXP causing "lag" effect down my end especially in on-line FPS games.

First of all WinXP makes you more vunerable to attacks as it opens up more ports (a lot more then Win 98Se/ME) and also does some crappy background stuff which is not really needed! On my system, I noticed two IP's in my firewall log that had constant connection and backtracking those IP's took me to this telecomms company in Korea, so it's obvious I was hacked (Norton's Firewall 2002 is NOT as secure as you think it is as it opens more ports which it doesn't tell you about!). How I was hacked I don't know but I believe its via the Sierra's AVP2 servers some rouge server must have obtained my IP while I connected to it and hacked me.

1. You say you don't have a firewall, you MUST get one, don't rely on WinXP's own firewall (I don't trust it). I now use a dual firewall combo ... Nortons Firewall / Sygate Professional which blocks some opened ports by Nortons and other OS ports such as ntkernal.exe (what the hell is ntkernal.exe accessing the net for is beyond me), svchost.exe (this nasty rubbish is for remote connections to your machine), lsass.exe (LSA Shell Export Version?!?). I think of these as backdoor snooping aids from "you know who".

2. Right click My Computer/Properties disable System Restore, Disable Automatic updates, also under Remote Access, uncheck "Allow Remote assistance invitations to be sent from this machine" if you're not granting remote access to other users. Right click C drive in Win Explorer then Properties and disable indexing. Go in C:\Windows\Prefetch and delete all those *.PF files.

3. Go to blackviper and read WinXP optimising techniques ... there are loads of crappy services running which make you vunerable to attack and stop those services. It's important to backup your current services config before making any changes (http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm - check the WinXP Pro/Home links down the page.) You will need to experiment with services ... you can disable resource wasting services such as :-

Alerter
Automatic Updates
Computer Browser
Creative Nvidia Driver Helper
Error Reporting
Help & Support
Indexing
Messanger (Don't worry MSN will still work)
Remote Registry (Nasty nasty! People can change ur registry using remote access!)
Smart Card
Smart Card Helper
SSDP Discovery Service
System Restore
Themes (Window themes will not work e.g Windowblinds)
Universal PnP (Hacker can use this and exploit is well documented in MS Updates! You're still better off disabling it)
Web Client (unless you running a website)
Windows Time (Auto syncronizes time with windows.com)
Wireless Zero Config (Not needed unless you using Wireless).

Obviously the above is best done after a clean install and you will be impressed with the speed increase. Additionally try other housekeeping functions such as clearing IE's cache, clearing forms, reducing the size of XP's IE cache (mine's set to 100MB and default setting is 1.2gig (ack!)
I think ... also try setting XP's paging file to max/min of 1.5gig and not the dynamic 768MB - 1.5gig which frags disk faster.

Rav found with XP Corp to access certain files you've gotta be running the machine in admin mode and boot from a security disk which is created specific for each copy.

Without booting in this mode only windows can read the data, which i've found not many hacker are able to do properly because its the 64bit system comming into play and alot of hacker don't use the actual 64bit Command Environment or programs that can handle the data size for standard partition data

Best anti-hack measure any user can do is a full 64bit mode, as most are people who are using 3rd party programs it won't recognise your hard disk - a bit like a program that recognises NTFS, but you can't actually read or write the data because its trying to access the data as if stored as FAT32
