Need some help here please.
Whenever i run programs that uses advanced shaders, everything runs really slow and jerky. On 3Dmark03 i had an average fps of 4 on all the tests except that bomberplane one.
If i run far cry on any other graphics setting then lowest, it runs like an 80-year old woman.
And that incredible .kkriger 96k game (http://www.theprodukkt.com) runs just as slow.
I think it must be a shader issue.

My specs are:
Win XP
P4 northwood 2.8 ghz
Geforce FX5200
512 ddr

Have any other of you guys had these problems?

The 5200 isn't as fast as the later cards of course. Some things you could try :

Use 1024x768x32 (as its faster than 800x600x32)
Reduce any texture sizes/quality to low.

Aside from that I cant think of anything else - didn't think much of the game anyway.

Is 1024 faster!? You learn something new every day
Still one would think that games with advanced shaders would be playable on anything but the lowest setting.

I think i've tried everything.. i've reduced everything to lowest in the nvidia performance settings aswell but it still lags whenever those shaders are involved. Maybe it's time to swap the graphics card then.

Thanks for your help anyway
Btw you're right about far cry, it's not that good. I'm just annoyed that it won't run smoothly on my system

The GeForce FX5200 is a fairly slow card.

Although it has all the latest features (eg: full DirectX 9 support), its speed is on par with a GeForce 4 MX.

That's why it only costs £50-70.

BTW. When you post your system specs, the graphics card is almost certainly the most important spec - since it has the largest impact on performance by far.

Even a FX5600 was rather sluggish with the demo, so you might need something faster than that...

Hmm there's really only one thing to do then; Wait for the geforce6.
I refuse to go ATI. Don't really know why, i just don't like them. Probably because all my friends have ATI and i feel the need for deviation.

I wont get anything ATI either for my desktop computers. Didn't have much choice with the laptop, as I couldn't get a 64-bit computer with nVidia's Go system... The ATI one I've got isn't bad (plays UT2004 & Halo quite nicely), just not keen on them...

Yeah they're really not bad cards, it's just a matter of taste i guess.
UT2004 is actually more fun then i thought. Halo on the other hand was totally dissapointing mainly because they didn't port the coop mode.

I wonder if they'll ever bring back the voodoo chipsets?

3dfx sold off their technology to nvidia and are now working with the US military - at least thats what I read somewhere back when 3dfx first went tits-up.

ATI is far superior... you won't run into any of those problems on a sweet Radeon 9800 XP card .
