Direct your attention to the newest codebase addition, "Tester" by an anonymous coder (or rather "Mix Master Max"). For anyone missing out on this massively over-helpful piece of code here it is:

Does the codebase get moderated? Ive seen totally pointless additions to it crop up before. Its supposed to be a place where people can find generally helpful, working code. People have to stop posting rubbish like this. Its not funny.

Only by Rich. Of course, we may get the change to moderate it with the new forums ... You never know

since people are placing unmoderated executable code in the codebase I'd be very careful and thoroughly read it (the code) before running it. Hate to see some newb run some malicious code that could have been prevented.

Perhaps there should be a warning flag for code that contains potentialy dangerous (file/system altering) commands.

provided by whom?
My point was that anything (including intentionally malicious code) can be posted there without moderation.

Erm, well isn't a codes usefulness really determined by the third party, Ie. the leaner.. So how can you moderate what snippets are useful or not useful ?. Not everyone has previous programming experience, and even those that do, may not come from a previous dialect of Basic. So they might appreciate some smaller too the point examples.. Moreover, should only experienced coders be allowed to post snippets.. I don't think so.

From a technical stand point. There's bound to be snippets posted with every patch. There's no guarantee a snippet will work the same on different revisions of Dbpro . Either through command obsolescence, flag changes or compiler behaviorally changes.

uwd I think you miss my point. Let's say I post some code that deletes *.dll from your system/system32 directory, the I title it "Awesome new Network Game Code" or some other enticing title. Then some noob comes along and downloads and runs the code - not understanding what the code actually does. Then what?

The code in the codebase should be moderated for "Malicious Content" not for "usefulness" based on some mod's opinion.

get me?

I agree...the forum deletes obscenities, I'm sure you could employ the same functionality to scan for references to file and DLL opcodes in the codebase.

I get your point

Set Cursor 300,200
Print "Testing..."
WAIT 3000
CLS
Set Cursor 300,200
Print "Thank you for using Tester"

OMG.....that's like some sort of program I do everytime for testing a new language.......but this is......so.....WTF??????? why someone would want that stupid piece of code????? I know that n00bs doesn't know too much things but even the DB example files are better! lol!

I agreed with you.......but moderated?...hmm what if I see some useful code and don't download it that time but when I need it I remember where it was and when I see the code has been deleted or declared as "unuseful". Everyone has his right for putting his code snippets...

I agree everyone has his right but blatant "wind-up" code snippets and the dangerous ones ought to be filtered out somehow.

That one quoted was of no use to anyone as far as I can see - not even someone who has never even inserted a CD into their computer - other pieces of code that don't conform to wind-up and dangerous I agree ought to stay regardless of their actual usefulness as we can all decide for ourselves whether we want to use it or not.

A new person to the language though may not have such luxury.

hmmmmm I heard of ratings on the codebase...when I add something to the codebase it says a checkbox: "Allow ratings?" and "Allow comments?". But I haven't see any ratings or comments in any code snippet....perhaps we can vote if a code is useful or not...we're in democracy, not?

DarkGUY: I wondered that too. I've never been given the opportunity to rate code. Maybe it was a feature that wasnt implemented.

CR:

Erm, I don't remember directing that statement at you, but, since you care . Yes, Malicious Code should be deleted. I think this should be self regulated though, providing theres support for user feedback(ratings/messages) in the code base. Although, from the a quick look around there doesn't appear to be. Hmm, Could prolly do with some type target audience rating also, so users can see how hard to understand a snippet might be.. Newbie/Inter/Experience etc..

you guess obviusly havent seen the one on code base:

"i code to control the camera using the arrow keys"

"set camera to arrow keys"

http://www.tinnedhead.tk under re-construction.

chuckle, so your suggesting that everybody knows that.. Obviously not ...

To make point, i'll bet there are (new and old) users alike whom first learnt this command while browsing the code base. There is no workable definition of what constitutes a valuable snippet.. A handy bit of code, may only be one line...

so is this useless.

It is to me, but perhaps not to somebody else..
