Yippe! Ive done it. Ive survived 5 years of secondary school. Its over! Just the exams to go and i can finally get off to college.

Still don't understand the difference between 'college' and 'university' in the UK. Here, you finish high school, you're free; if you want to go to college you can, but universities are basically just better colleges (or are supposed to be), I don't believe there's a technical definition.

@Mouse: In the Uk after you finish secondary school at 16 you are free. You can go onto further education in college which is what the majority do. After college University is where you go to get degrees, masters etc. University is for people who want to expand further in a certain topic e.g doctors

Hey there, I have finished school and also doing GCSE's now already done my first exam which was the old French, my next exam is in 2 weeks, which is quite far away lol

I've got Latin language on Tuesday and Latin Literature on Friday.

Plus my teachers thought it would be fun to make top sets take A level modules. Pure Maths 1 A level module in a week. That's not too bad though. I've done an AS English Literature module already.

For AS I'm taking:

Maths
Further Maths
English
Computing
Physics

Great fun.

My oldest brother is at Oxford and my next oldest brother has got a place at Trinity College Cambridge (and he got straight A*s at GCSE!). No pressure, eh?

The exam I'm most dreading is English.
If I have to Argue, Persuade, Advise one more time I will actually die.

What board are you guys taking? I think most of mine are with AQA

I've also always wondered about the whole college/uni thing. In Australia we have:

TAFE (Technical And Further Education), which you basically only go to if you did really badly in High School and need a second way into Uni. I presume this must be what the UK's College is.

Then we have University which is basically all your degrees and such, ie, the UK's Uni and the US's College. Crazy!

Basically, there's a separate school for the last 2 years.
Most schools don't want to teach A levels as well and colleges are just for A levels.

My school, however, goes on till you're 18, then you go straight to university (unless you want to take a gap year)

im in yr10, n im doing graphic design, art, french and history (+default) for GCSE, i hate the fact u have to do a language and the amount of coursework is immence (i have 6-7 pieces, 2 in for this tue) and study leave has started here so i cant see my friends in yr11 etc

Lol, I was watchign a video on revision practise and it had this girl on it who got 4 Es, 1 D nad 5 Cs in her GCSes and she was happy! 0_0 For me getting a B would be the end of the world A would be very, very disappointing.

NO OFFENCE IS MEANT BY THE STATEMENTS BELOW

College is for the less academic, maybe less able people.

University is where you do the really academic subjects and get degrees.

m doing 3 A levels at the moment - got 12 GCSE's and my worst grade was a B. At my college is a girl who broke a record or something similar, Im not sure, but she got 11 A*s.

Yeah that's only if your school is a sixth form. If not then you have to go to a seperate place to take your a levels.

I always thought that a college was a privatly owned University, while a University was a public college.
Till today, I don't understand this whole GCSE/A level/Sixth form thing. We don't have those over here (As far as I know). What are they?

lol, we don't have them down here either. It's simply:

High School -> University
or
High School -> TAFE -> University

And TAFE's like a mix between High school and Uni, people only go there if they can't get into the Uni course they want (mainly because they got poor grades in high school).

Your system is so confusing.

GCSEs are the exams you take before the sixth form (General Certificate of Secondary Education)

You have to take English and Maths and a Science (I think) but the rest are up to you. At my school we take 11 and we have to take English, Maths, Two Sciences and French - so we only get to choose a few.

After GCSEs you take A Levels (Advanced). You take AS's in the first year (four of these normally) then you drop one for A2's. A2's are your main exams for getting into University, but more and more (especially for Oxford + Cambridge) they're looking at GCSE results to separate between two people with the same A level results.

Basically, we have exams every year.

In University you go to study complex, academic things usually soon after A-Levels. This is why there's been this uproar over university fees - Mr Blair wants too many people to go to university.
More and more of them are studying "mickey mouse" subjects instead of going into apprenticeships etc.

Colleges anyone can go to, to do anything from starter french to cooking courses

i did really well in my SATS in yr 2,6 and i got highest levels (not highest marks tho) in yr 9

i thought u cud do the original A levels (two years and one set of exams) instead of AS and A2 if u wanted!?

The way it works is - to do A2 you must complete the AS year(the half A level) of the course. AS is a qualification in itself, but to go on to better things youve got to do A2.

David T - I cant understand you not doing SATS - theyre compulsory. In Primary they are used to gauge your performance when you finish and in Year 9 at secondary they are used to decide whether you are worthy to take the options you have chosen for GCSE.

i dunt know what i got in yr 2 (it was high) and in yr 6 i got all 5s (pass level in yr9! boy in my school got 4,4,5 and got kept back :p) and in yr 9 i got 7,7,8 (maximum available)

Not all schools do SATS.
I haven't done them. I think they're only needed if the school teaches the national curriculum.

Compulsory? No . As I mentioned earlier they're only compulsory in state schools.

In private / independant schools the only government exams that we take are GCSEs and AS/A2s.

We do end of year exams though, but they're written by our teachers and don't carry too much significance.

I had Latin Language 1 today.

It was actually ridiculously easy. Everyone thought so - so I guess the grade boundaries will go up. That was the easier of the Latin Papers though.

I also had Spanish listening which was OK. You can't really tell how well you've done on listening papers.

There was only one translation and two comprehensions. Most of it was about this hard:

Quintus bonus rex erat.
There was about one purpose clause and that was pretty much it. Looks like they're saving all their Ablatives Absolutes et al for Language 3.

What GCSEs are you doing?

Presumably you've got French Listening tomorrow.
I've got a feeling it'll be well easy - most of the modern ones are.
