Neil Peart is, by far, the most TALENTED and GIFTED percussionist that has ever lived. He can perform techniques on the drums that should be humanly/physically impossible. I defy anyone to state otherwise.

That's quite the lofty claim, and I do appreciate it (being that he's a Canadian like me). But I have to respectfully disagree. IMHO, there are a few rock drummers better than Peart:

Have you ever heard of Michael Giles? (original King Crimson drummer). Listen to the album In the Court Of The Crimson King and you will see what I mean.

How about Bill Bruford? (orginal Yes drummer and later also with KC). Listen to some of the first Yes albums.

How about Phil Ehart of Kansas?


If you want to go beyond just Rock (and your claim seems to).. then how about legendary Gene Krupa? One of the greatest Jazz drummers of all time!! As a matter of fact, I would say most average Jazz drummers are about as good as Peart skillwise, but I do realize it's somewhat like comparing apples and oranges.


So, please don't make blanket statements like that. I realize that it is your own opinion, but you state it as if it's fact.

CattleRustler, you are my hero. You beat me to this post and posted the best drummer ever.

Look, I'm am the best drummer in my school, possibly my county, and I hardly ever practice. I believe that I have improved just by listening to the many styles of Peart. Right now, I am listening to Rush and him playing his part in The Trees.

By the way, Rush = Great Band.

Yarbles,

I agree with your choices of great drummers there, and I will add John Bonham, Kieth Moon, Buddy Rich...and the list could go on forever. I, just so you know, am not some teeny bopper spewing self fulflling factoids (just so we are clear ). I am 34 and have been playing the drums since I was 7. I make that blanket statement 1) to shush the non-drummers, as they know not what they speak, and 2) to force those who are in-the-know, to speak up!
Each drummer you mentioned, and each suggestion to listen to, has already been fulfilled. I have been listening to Kansas and Yes since way before many people on these boards were born. All I can say is there are techniques happening in Peart's drumming that I have yet to hear anyone achieve. I have heard some of his students go strong at his style but all fail by comparison. One good example is the drummer for The Dave Matthews Band(sp?). That drummer is awesome! He clearly studied Peart. End of day? He can't keep up with him.

Music is music and we like what we like, and I don't force my opinion on anyone. Drumming, however, is a hard-learned discipline, that can be measured - almost like a Martial Art. There are clear boundaries and clear examples of Masters. Peart is one of them.

CR, it's nice to talk to somebody on the same wavelength as me. I too have been into music for a long time. I'm 33 and have been playing guitar, bass and drums since I was 13. I usually played guitar or bass, but I've drummed in a couple of bands too.

Most of the best drummers that I've played with have Peart as their top guy. But usually they relented and admit that Giles is better after I make them listen to the first Crimson album over and over

Unfortunately Giles quit KC after the first 2 albums and became a session drummer, so almost nobody has heard of him. It's a shame because he truly is amazing.

One thing worth mentioning about Peart is that he is also an awesome lyricist. He wrote most of the lyrics for the Rush albums, and the band really hit their stride for a few albums in the late 70s - early 80s. Unfortunately, for me, their creativity kinda petered out after that and their unique writing style caught up with them. Having Peart write the words and Lee and Lifeson come up with the music afterwards just hasn't worked since the mid 80s, it has become too much like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole!

Anyways, that's my spiel about Rush, hope you enjoyed that!

I appreciate your knowledge of music. I too play guitar, and bass, aside from drums - makes for interesting happenings when the digital track recorder is out and about I played bass for a gig-band for 2 years. It's always fun to play out and have people yelling and screaming when the band nails the songs....rock on brother!

I agree that the whole "mentalist-write-lyrics-beforehand" thing might have worked for a while, it's not the way to write songs. Rush is one of those bands that you either hate or love. I personally can take em or leave em, but I sure do love listeneng to Peart. Aside from Bonham, he was a great influence. When I was 17, and bored of learning anything you put in front of me, I went and took lessons t learn how to sight read and to learn the intricacies of NP.

Most difficult Rush song learned note for note on drums: Red Barchetta

NP example of inhuman limb ability: during intro of Subdivisions - Signals (during music into when they hit BRIDGE music in key of B - if you listen closely, you'll hear 4 limbs, in 4 different timings. I can play 3/4 of it, it's the tap-hi hats that throw me. (8th note triplets) One would think it was a studio track for the mastering of album Signals, but alas! no - he does it live!)

I'm a drummer of 15 years so I can have a say too


Fact is we have no idea who the best drummer in the world is. Think about it, do you KNOW everyone in the world? haha. I guarantee you there are plenty of drummers out there who are better then peart and all the others mentioned, they just haven't been lucky enough to hit it big. my brother Jimmy for example, can play every Rush song flawlessly and then some.

While I do respect Peart, I'm not a great fan of his playing really, I'm not a great fan of Bonham either actually.

These days, the Vinnie Coliatia's(spelling) , Virgil Donati's, Terry Bozzio's, Grant Collins etc etc of this world, are the guys really pushing independence.

Ive been drumming for about 1 1/2 years now, playing guitar 4 years, kinda play around my band mates bass at rehersals as its very similar to guitar, keyboards 5 years, music is awesome

If he can (which I highly doubt) then he has talent beyond 99% of the drummers out there. Is he cashing in on this? Could be quite lucrative

@Yarbles: Pick up Test For Echo if you want one CD that I think is Peart's most lyrically beautiful.


I can play a lot of Peart stuff, my friends are amazed. I'd say I'm at 5% of his playing skills. A good start...

Back on topic, I've been playing drums since I was 5, and now im 14.5. I doubt I will ever make it as a programmer, so I am hoping that my friends and I can get our band going. I wrote 5 songs so far, following the Rush style of music making (Peart does the lyrics, Lee and Lifeson do the music).

The bassist and I want to name our band after a Rush song. If we can convince the guitarist, the band will be called Everyday Glory (off of Counterparts, one of Rush's best CDs in my opinion. Love Double Agent )

i agree with mattman, cheaper drum pads have very slow response time, and the good electric sets are like 3K and up.

anyway, i've been drumming for about 8 years. my friends are really impressed with what i can do, i don't know though. I used to be able to play a lot of MushroomHead and Otep and Rob Zombie, but then my double bass pedal broke for a while and i'm just now getting back into double bass stuff.

i'd say my favorite drummers are eric singer, bun e. carlos (don't know if i spelled that right), Thomen Stauch (Blind Guardian), Moke (Otep), Neil Smith (original Alice Cooper drummer), Skinny (MushroomHead). I know i listed a lot of metal guys, but i like crazy stuff. hm, the drumming on Black Juju and Halo of Flies (alice cooper, neil smith) is awesome man.

and yes, rush is awesome and so is peart.

Ah, finally read the latest posts in this thread.

CR: I guess we aren't an "official" Rush cover band, although I do have plans for some covers of their work...

Abomb: Yep, I'll admit keyboards are cool, but drums are a bit cooler in my opinion. I can play both pretty well (see, being a Rush fan, all I do is turn the synth on on my keyboard and start playing something from Grace Under Pressure or Moving Pictures).
