Hey all,

I just made a simple model of a computer monitor in JTEdit ( my prefered modeler ).

When I finished, i figured I might as well give it a bit of a texture to get away from that horrid plain white colour.

To do this, I opened up the UV mapper in JTEdit, seperated the model into it's components ( screen, screen border, top, right, left, back, bottom ), then saved the results. When I looked at my resulting UV map, it was a mass of huge and miniture polygones that disapear off of the UV map all together.

Here's the model that I tried to UV map via JTEdit:
Monitor-mapped.x
And here's the same model before I tried UV mapping it.
Monitor.x
( You'll have to Right-Click >> Save Target As since they are ASCII .x files )

Does anyone know an easier ( free ) way of UV mapping the object?

Thanks.
Jess.

Yeah jess, get lithunwrap :
http://members.lycos.co.uk/arras1/download/Lithunwrap.zip
That's what i use,it's probably the best free unwrapper around. If you need any help, feel free to ask.

Yeah, I tried LithunWrap ( 1.3 )... But, I couldn't figure it out... And without being able to see the actuall model, it makes it extremely difficult to do it!!

Thanks for the help Grismald...

Maybe a ink to a tutorial for LithUnwrap, or possibly a basic outline of how to use it ( I had a look but I couldn't find anything ).

Thanks again.
Jess.

Hey Jess. Quite a while a go you posted a bullet code. I found it very nice to use HOWEVER...it appears to lag up my game, do you know why?

Please try to help me!
Cheers,
Nick Rakosi
PS. I haven't copied all of the code! Only the shooting bit.

I see, it's true that it isn't easy to get it working properly at first. In fact you can see a model and work on its uvmap at the same time.Just hit preview->show model in the top bar.

Also, check out this tut on unwrapping a character with lith:
http://www.psionic.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/tutorials/lowpoly/zuvm.html
Some of the steps might not be needed for your model, but it explains quite well the unwrapping process.
(BTW i can't open your model ATM, could you post a binary instead of a ASCII .x file?)
Hope this helps,

Grismald

Grismald,

Wow, that looks like a great tutorial. Thanks for that, I'll look into it right away

And being able to see the model does help lol

SAS Elite Pvt Rakosi,

Go over to the DBC boards and look up the thread "SAS Elite Pvt Rakosi - Bullet code".

Jess.

[EDIT]
Sure... Here's the .3ds equivelants:
Monitor-mapped.3ds
Monitor.3ds

Hmm, I also just realised that the files I gave above ( the .x ones ) both link to the same, unmapped file... Links are fixed up now.
[/EDIT]

[EDIT 2]
It appears that there are a couple of strangely placed polygons when I export the object as .3ds from JTEdit...
I don't know how to fix this though, because from within JTEdit, the model looks fine... But in the preview of it in Lith, it's got a few polygons nudged into the model ( you'll be able to see the ones I mean ).
[/EDIT 2]

[EDIT 3]
Try these:
Monitor.dbo
Monitor.dbo
They're the .dbo versions of the same objects ( Converted using the awesome .x/.3ds to dbo converter )
[/EDIT 3]

Jess,

I took a look at your models. I think JTEdit is a little confused about having three meshs. For this model you probably don't need the meshes to be separate and can combine them into one mesh with the Merge tool. Then the texture mapping should be easier.

P.S. For fastest response from me, I'd recommend using my on-line forum. Because I'm busy with the rewrite, I don't come here that often.

Hey John,

To be honest, I never thought of asking on your forum, lol.

I'll give that a go... That may also solve the problem with the .3ds model having stray polygons.

Next time, I'll put up a post on the JT forums.

Btw, I really like JTEdit, but it seems to be a bit unstable on my computer... Don't know why though. It's fine on other computers... Just mine tends to crash it alot But, it's ok, I save frequently, and am willing to wait untill the program get's its rewrite

Thanks.
Jess.

Update!

Thanks to John ( The creator of JTEdit ) ( Nice program btw ), I have managed to sucesfully ( and extremely quickly ) UV map my model

Here's the new model:
Monitor-mapped2.x
Monitor-mapped2.dbo

And here's the UV Map that I made

I'm off to texture it in Fireworks MX 2004 now

Jess.

Cool, i knew you would sort it out.
I managed to open your model (Monitor-mapped2.x),but i get some strangely placed polygons.
Anyway, just make sure it looks ok when you display it in DBP.

Yeah, I got it to work

And I got rid of those horrible stray polygons.

Here's a Series of renders from JTEdit:

~36KB - - - ~32KB

~12KB - - - ~14KB

~25KB

Thanks for all the help.
Jess.

looking good
The texture on the top looks a bit rushed, but i'm sure you'll fix that
So jtedit has an internal renderer? I might give it a try then.

Oh, that Texture took all of 10 minutes to do ( I had to redo it after I decided to change the UV map slightly... Then decided to keep the old one, lol ).

I am by no means a texture artist, lol.
But it would be nice to get into that so that I can help out in Ausukusa a little more

Jess.

Ok, I'm happy with everything now, so I can start to properly Texture the model...

Have a look here for the latest everything

http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~jessticular/downloads/models/monitor/

Thanks again to everyone that helped.

( And I feel special that the author of JTEdit took time out to post here, hehe ).

Have a good one
Jess.

Van B's VanMESH allows you to do this, but it is still in development, but other than that, I dont know of any other program besides ZBrush ( which doesn't really do that anyway ), but it also costs.

By "update the models texture as it's being edited" do you mean just reload the texture from disk, assuming you've changed it in another program, or do you mean actually drawing textures within the modeler?

JTEdit can do the former via the "Update" button on the Material palette. It can't do the latter.
