This may or may not be a noob question but here goes--can a textured/untextured level be shaded using dark basic or must I use an external shader?

Not sure if thats the term but yeah I guess.
You know--a bright hallway-turn the corner, a dim or dark hallway--shadows,varying degrees of light
bright light on top of desk, dim desk, darkness beneath desk--that kind of shading

that called lightmapping...

DBC - no. Shadows can be faked though by using dark blobs under objects.

DBPro - not really. Although DBPro supports realtime shadows for objects, there is a major performance hit.

For best results, you need external software.

It is possible to get a lightmapped level into DBP. You just need to load it as a DBO. gile[s] will do it..
