Geek Culture / Forum keeps crashing?

Okay so this has happenned to me MANY times in the last week, usually for only half an hour or so, but the forum sql just completely freezes. I'm sure its not my connection or pc, as all other websites continue to function.

Its not too much of a problem, but its ceratinly frustrating. why do I visit the forums so much? I just check it every hour or so when I'm working as often I have to wait for a few minutes whilst something renders/downloads etc.

Has anyone else noticed this, and is there something that can be done? Perhaps the database is getting overloaded or the site bandwidth is struggling?

I'm not trying to be critical of the site, heaven forbid. Its just that it appears to br freezing more and more regularly. Its not a browser cache problem on my part, I've checked this. I'm using the lastest IE on the latest XPHome, surfing on 512kbs Broadband BTW

Yup, I'm with you Sam.

Usually around this time of the day when I come home, relax, then check the forums they just freeze. Probebly just an overflowing SQL database or something.

Hopefully it'll get sorted.

yeah, seems a daily occurence. I don't know if the SQL is freezing so to speak, but the site just basically locks up.

hope they can sort it

Possibly the web site is exceeding the quota limit - it was certainly doing it a fair bit last week.

Ahhh glad its not just me then, I was preparing to be flamed. I'm sure Rich is aware of this happenning there must be a log/record being put somewhere by the sql? Here's hoping its easy to fix. I wouldn't know where to start

this has been happening for many months but sometimes it's worse than others (ie days of newsletter release, etc). I notice when it's early evening in the UK I can't get on at all or it's very very sluggish, and that's pretty much every weekday - weekends don't seem a problem, probably because everyone is out in the pub having a pint!

There are two distinct things going on here.

1) Simple high load.
2) An attack on the forums.

1 - There ARE definitely times of the day when this site will respond slower than usual. Infact, I'll show you them. Remember all times below are local server time (GMT -5).



I'll leave it to you to figure out which hours are likely to be the slower ones.

2) Over the past few days our site has been attacked by some Romanian jerk from the IP address: 217.19.12.10. They were running a script to request numerous forum pages and thus causing quite a strain on the MySQL server. This IP has been blocked out at a router level (hence things are running smoothly now).

We (and our host) are keeping a close eye on things given this coming to light.

Oh, and we don't have bandwidth quota limit - so it's not that!

Thanks for posting that chart - that directly correlates to the times I see this site bog down. Why is the tgc site server time GMT -5 as if the server was located in the eastern USA? I thought you blokes were blokes, mate?
