yay i cant wait, apparantly theres all these hidden features and yum 40gigs of mp3s in my pocket mm lush.
need another 20 gigs of music to fill it up.
they double up as hard drives as well apparantly.

There are better value MP3 players around y'know...
Anyhoo - why not get a 3G phone - probably work out cheaper (for me its £69 instead of a couple of hundred) - and you could then put your music on that...

A friend of mine was gonna get an iPod... I think she still is...

A 15GB one... it's $440 I think from Retravision... Or maybe Tandy... Something like that anyway...

She reasoned that she could get an MP3 player that has 1.5GB for $350 or pay that bit extra for the iPod...

Actually I really love the designs of iPods,if I had enough cash I'd probably buy one. I think if I can hold out tho, a Creative Zen PMC would be even cooler

About a year ago I got an RCA Lyra MP3 player that cost $199US. It has 20GB storage with LCD menu system kind of the like the ipod. The only thing is it's about twice as large and heavy as an ipod, but it's still a great deal. It also doubles as a hard drive.

You guys sure are paying alot for iPods. I love them, don't own one, but alot of friends do. I personally wouldn't need a 40g or even a 20g one.

Im going to use it as a firewire drive as well.
I have 4 macs now so it should work well as a backup drive and with itunes.
my old pentium3 doesnt have a fire wire port yet and I use win98se so i cant run an ipod on the pc here.
I think I will wait for the next OS from microsoft and skip this xp variant.

40GB of space... around what, 1280hrs of music; battery life of 20hrs.
to me that just seems a tad pointless.
I mean firstly how much music do you need exactly?

Hell i don't think my entire CD/LP collection is that large.
Secondly the price is a little ridiculous don't you think; the price of a low-end laptop, why not just buy a bloody laptop or pocketpc?

Currently I have a MoVo 256MB; but i'm thinking about either upgrading to the MoVo Slim cause it's just so damn cute; or the MoVo2 1.5GB.

The way i see it i'll never be away from my computer long enough to warrent the extra 2.5 GB of the 4GB version. Could be wrong but i doubt it.

I've got a 128 meg mp3 player which cost £50 which isn't bad - I've seen that Muvo2 player too - pretty good and only £150 here:

What are you chatting lads!! It's all about the sexy styling of the IRiver, of which, I am pleased to say, I am an owner.

Also, for anyone into recording stuff, it is the only MP3 recorder in its class with a preamp built into the microphone input, meaning you can plug a top notch mic into it and make recordings in very good quality.

IPod is girly! IRiver is masculine for us big men with big cahoones!! hehe.

Creative cover the entire series... MP3, Firewire, etc...
the iPod has never impressed me.

I mean why buy a Music player that double as a 40GB Drive when you can buy USB/Firewire drives cheaper with as msuch or more space?
You'll never need that much music...

Seriously, it is just a walkman; i don't see why everyone is so hyped about them all the time. If it came with portable screen which opened up so it could play burnt DVD movies; then yeah (but that said it wouldn't have the battery power for that), but it doesn't.

And i agree with Fallout the iRiver definately looks like the blokes version of the iPod

Yes, the IRiver has a 40GB version, and has firewire and USB2.0 support. It is also MAC compatible - just download the MAC firmware. The only reason why I prefer it to the IPod though isn't because I think it looks better, but just because of the recording input. It's spot on for MIC recordings. Infact, it's the only player I know of that allows you to connect an external mic without a preamp.

I must admit though Raven, it depends what situation you're in. A walkman is fine for most people if your only listening to an hour of music, but I take mine to the labs at uni and work for up to 8 hours, so listening to the same tracks over and over would get boring. This way I just play a whole bunch of albums, and then save my work on it when I'm done and take it home.

i have 20 gigs already of music so im already halfway there with a 40gig.
ipods can record so i dont know what your referring to when you say its the only one who can do it.

is it 400 firewire? or the new 800?

whats the price difference as well if i chose an iriver.

the statement made regarding if its more masculine i think is a personal opinion and would have to question your manhood to assess that claim lol.

lol. Not sure about the firewire specs. Could be the 800, could be the 400. I would suggest http://www.iriveramerica.com and have a little look at the tech specs.

To clear up the recording issue, yeah most MP3 players can record. You plug in your diskman, or other external device and they record straight in, but the reason is works is because they're not true signal only line-outs (i.e. there is power in the other device). Microphones do not supply there own power (unless they have a built in preamp, which is a special bit of kit and most wont (if your mic takes batteries, it has a prearm)). Therefore there is no power coming from the mic, and you can't record onto the device. The IRiver is the only MP3 player I know of that preamps the microphone port, meaning I can use my pro microphone with it to go outside and make professional quality recordings.

All other MP3 players would require me to buy a preamp unit, which is an annoyance, cos you have to keep changing the batteries - plus it's not very convenient to hold. But I appreciate to the vast majority of people, this makes no difference and they won't need it.

I think most MP3 players allow for direct recording with a mic.

I still prefer my MiniDisc player.
It cost £150 (that was about a year ago) and it runs for 50 hours on one AA battery.

Each disc costs about £1 and you can get about 70 songs on them (even though I only put 50).

It came with a rechargable battery and charging stand as well.
It can record of the computer at 32X speed and it can record directly from a microphone.

Lots have internal mics, which are ok for conference recording etc. but no good for high quality recordings. Also, all will work basic on kinetic movement of the microphone element. If you talk into a mic, you move the component, create kinetic energy and the signal goes to the MP3 player, but the lack of a preamp means its a terrible quality signal. So yeah, most MP3 players will work with a mic, but it'll sound like your nans croaky voice after her medication.

I'm surprised minidiscs never became that huge though, because they are good, like you say. They're even used in the recording industry for external recording, but MP3 players are a superior technology, so they will kill off all competitors someday, in one file format or another.
