Hi ,

Not planning a convention or anything, but it would certainly help getting one set up if all of us people in the US could say what state (and/or coast to make the counting easier ) they're in. If a lot of us turn out to be in the same general area, well, I'm sure we could organize some kind of meet-up .

I'm in NH (east coast).

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We're centrally located and gasoline is 20 cents below the national average.

Funny thing is that the nearest IGDA chapter is in Dallas. But, I've never heard of a Texan on the forum.

We have people from everywhere. IF this were to actually happen, it'd be nice if it was in a more central location, like Nebraska or Kansas

And it doesn't necessarily have to happen where someone LIVES, we could rent out a hall anywhere and make cookies, tell ghost stories.

All I know, is if we ever wanted this to really happen, we'd need someone with manguts and a little responsible nature under his/her belt to take charge and make it happen.

A central location is a good concept, but unfortunatly I think most people won't be willing to drive across several states. If it's more than 4-5 hours drive, I'm out. The concept unfortunatly has to be 'save as many as you can', so to speak.

Perhaps we could organize three conventions, one for each time zone, and set them all up to go at the same time-- perhaps even with live webcam feedback or something along those lines. I'd estimate, from the numbers, at least 5 to 6 people would turn up for each one, probaly more on the east coast.

Nah, that would end up costing more money for each individual person and have you heard of an airplane? They're handy in these situations

That depends. If people can just all work out a neutral place to meet and bring their laptops, no money really has to be involved. The advantages to that are that it costs nothing to set up and thus there are no attendance fees . Disadvantages, of course, are that there won't be any space set out for it, and it couldn't really last more than one day.

I think that the logistics are against it happening. And, flying in for a one or two day event would probably not be economical or tempting. The thing to do is to bundle the event with a much bigger event that has a large group appeal. For example, setting up the DB event in conjunction with and perhaps even inside the 2005 Origins convention. That would hook the Buckeyes and be withing driving distance of the East coast users and be additional incentive for everyone else to fly in. [Or a small group could use a mini-van and 'car pool' to Origins.]

It's also far enough in the future that it could be planned for location-wise and trip expense-wise

I suggested Orgins since it was a huge con and close to a lot ofusers. The 2005 Game Developers Conference in San Jose or the E3 in Las Vegas are equally good examples with appeal. Las Vegas is particularly appealling since they generally have cheap air-fares and are somewhat close to the Utah hub of developers. The down side is that I don't think we have anyone 'on the ground' there.

Well, the concept of three localized conventions was intended to avoid making anyone have to fly-- at the last US convention, some people drove a *long* way to get there, and it was a two-day event, and it did work. On the other hand, it wasn't a tiny, no-cash-involved event like the one I was thinking of.

TBH I've never heard of Origins before , and thus I don't know how possible it would be to make a convention part of it. But wouldn't it be better to make the meeting not overlap with any other major gaming events? Just my two cents.

E3 won't be in Las Vegas in 2005 :-\

All of the major conferences have found they loose too much money doing it outside of Los Angeles; so that is where basically everything is being held now.
You didn't wonder why E3 has been in LA the past 2 years in a row?

Basically it's cheaper to rent, fly and stay in California than anywhere else in the states; this is speaking world-wide.
I'm pretty sure if you have something like this...

either a) team up with Pure and Blitz to make it a BASIC developers Conference ... or b) have it in a place where most people are located.

Quote: "Yeah, E3 in vegas, that's a good idea "

$600 for 4days ... that's just to get into E3; not to be funny but that is a little steep for most.

I think teaming up is probably the best option, because you really need to get down the price of the actual convention tickets; So you need ALOT of people to allow you to bring down the price and cover your costs.

If you have it... plan it for a holiday weekend. Cause it is trying to travel such long distances.
The most important thing here, is you'll need someone to actually finance this ahead of time!!

It's all well and good Mouse putting the idea forward, but i sorely doubt he can financially back his idea.
A year ago when i tried to do this, I was fully willing to back it up; but there was a definately lack of interest... The thing is your going to need quite a few people to guarentee to make it worthwhile;

If you look at the UK one, even in a country as small as this where we can really drive/take a train within a day to where-ever we need to be; it is still something alot of people umm and err about.
More people = lower price, but at the same time; in order to get enough people the price can often be the key thing to turn them off.

Something I'd say is talk to Hubdule, before really planning this properly. As he has sucessfully run 2/3 'Sync On' Conventions in Germany, so I think he can help with this all.

just reading and thought I could put my opinion

The DB demographic by this poll seems to be centered in the mountain west and Northeast areas of the US. Obviuosly you want to have it somewhere imbetween... but yet not a barren wasteland, and have a major highway (I-80 anyone?) right by it... or even a major airport and a hotel. Another thing would be "who is the organizer". obviously if the organizer wouldn't want to travel to far with all the set-up and equipment.

As for me... you can count me out unless it is within 100 miles of Salt lake city, gas cost's too much right now for me to travel to far, and i am way to freakin busy lately... and it doesn't seem to be slowing down.

Anyway.. Good luck
