Ok, I keep hearing people mention fallout as one of the greatest games of all time. I like post appocolyptic stuff. I like RPGs. I like turn based stuff. I've never played these games though, so today I thought I might as well buy them.

I bought fallout, fallout 2 and fallout tactics as part of a trilogy bundle thing. Probably be here in a couple of days. My question is, do the stories tie together? How different is the gameplay quality/graphic quality? Should I be playing them in order, or doesnt it really matter?

A friend of mine suggested playing them in order. But, I have trouble getting the ancient audio setup to work for FO1 on my WinXP machine. I got FO2 to work and it takes off like the next generation after FO1. FOT is just set in the same universe as the RPGs, but it might be a bit of a spoiler for some of the events in them.

it would be better if you played them in order altough you can perfectly play fallout2 first but it's more fun playin fo1 and after that fo2. fallout tactics is not like fo1 and fo2 so it doesn't really matter when you play that one.

good to have another fallout fan around

hah! I'm not a fallout fan yet. I just saw the three as part of a bargain deal, and I remembered fallout always featured on peoples "top 10 games" lists, so I thought I'd pick them up. But I like RPGs. I've like the isometric turn based thing ever sinse UFO.

I'll take the advice of you guys and try and play them in order then. I know FO1 is old skool, but hopefully it'll work on my system. If not, I'll wack it on the Win98 PC.

Yeah... those are great games!
I'm actually playing Fallout 1 at the moment...(on a modern xp machine without any problems) that's because I never got it working with my 500mb hdd back then when it was a new game. So even though the graphics look crap (and I mean really ugly!) these days, I don't mind. It's just so good.

Basically Fallout 2 is like "Fallout 1"^2 More of just about everything. It's bigger and better. Plus it doesn't have such "timelimit" as the Fallout 1 does. There are somewhat overlapping storylines but nothing that would stop you from playing. I think there are about 50 or so storylineyears in between the two games.

Fallout Tactics, however is bit of letdown. It's like Fallout without any game. just the combats. No non-linear storylines or great character development. just battles that can last hours if you keep playing them in turn-based mode. Of course, there's the realtime mode, but that just makes it feel too much like an rts game. Too bad you kinda have to use it to beat the boredom. Never really played too far in that game... it just wasn't interesting. (missed just about everything that made Fallout 1&2 so great) It does look good, though.

oh and make sure you patch all games before you play them. These games have loads of bugs (that you might not ever even encounter) due to the complexity of the game. Just that if you don't patch them before playing, you'll lose all save games. (they're incompatible with the new patches)

The stories tie together. You really need to play fallout 1 first, that way, fallout 2 will be way easier to understand. (You will hear things about "my ancestor, the vaultdweller, vault 13".
They both work like a charm on my pc, fallout 1 has a few minor problems though, like crashes or corrupt saving.
Btw, I give you 2 advices.
-Put a rope in your inventory, and keep a supply of rad-x. (fallout 1)
-Do not join the slaves guild (fallout 2)

I never played fallout tactics before, because it isnt really a rpg.

Oddly enough, I started with FOT. I enjoyed it, but then I'm more of a squad level tactical combat fan than an RPG fan.

See, I've heard FOT is a different game to FO1 and FO2, so I was thinking maybe I should start with that? At least that way it won't be a let down if it has less substance, or whatever. Like Zircher, I'm a big fan of squad tactics, but I also like RPGs. For me, UFO: Enemy Unknown is still the greatest game ever made (although I've played it to death now). Hopefully I'll like them all.

Well, you could try all three and play the one that catches you fancy. I've been told that the end of FO1 is good. But, that's still a serious investment in time just to get there.

not really. you can complete both FO1 and FO2 quite fast, if you just know what to do. I've played FO1 couple days and I'm already way past the halfway. Thing is, I haven't been to all of the places or done many of the missions and quests available.

Starting with FOT makes sense, but going back to FO1 can be pain... in graphical sense. Also, I wouldn't recommend playing FO2 first... as it's in many ways better than FO1 and you'll start to miss all the little things that aren't there. (Better barter system, for example) So I'd say that you could start by checking out FOT, playing it a bit to get a good feeling about the whole package, then start with FO1 and proceed to FO2 after completing it or if the small things are starting to bug you out. (Not being able to switch places with an npc & such)

Funny. I got Fallout 1 and Thief 3 at the same day... and I've been playing a lot more Fallout 1. I just love using my .223 pistol. One hit kills currently. and I can take two non-aimed shots per turn usually with deadly accuracy. (95% is the max)

FOT is a bit, uhm, not fallout
The .223 pistol is quite good, but I rather use the upgraded Plasmarifle

Btw, I hate the beginning of fallout 2, damn temple . But I love the fact that you can <beep>uck everybody in New Reno for cash, invade the enclave base with teammates (dont give them armor ) and drive a car

well, I kinda thought I'd use the .223 rather than the plasmarifle given that the skill levels were 200% vs 29% or something like that.
But I guess it was a little stupid doing it that way, as the .223 seems to be the best "small gun" in the game. But it's still miles from the bigger weaps. In Fallout 2, the situation is much better when you've got Gauss weapons.
