You could use TreeMaker to make trees
but there are 2 problems
1. export to 3ds, obj and lwo
but you can save in 3ds and with Milkshape convert it to x.
2. the trees are not made for games
they have way too much faces (about 3000+).
the good thing is that this software is freeware
download it here
the downloads are at the bottom of the page.

You could use trueSpace 3.2 to convert it to x
load the 3ds file and save in x
if you want to download trueSpace 3.2 you need to register
and you will get the link and serial. The registration is free.

you can download GameSpace Light (free) or a shareware version of Quick 3D (http://www.quick3d.com) wich is a very good converter. You just have to register for downloading. The only limitation in the shareware version is that the output file will be "shareware_output.Whatever", and you can always rename the file...

Why not try Forester, http://www.dartnall.co.uk. Makes nice trees, saves in .x, even loaded one once. Cheap!

Not associated with Forester, just a happy customer...
