I think there was a challenge here in the forums a while ago or maybe it was on another modelling forum but anyhow the challenge was for people on the forum to download a simple model and change it slightly and then repost it and the next person would take the new model and change that slightly and so on till we had something unique.

Well I would like to try that again. We start of with a primitive like a sphere and then we all take turns modifying it and when its finished we take it over to the 2d art section and set the same challenge with the texture and so on.

I won’t tell you just yet what its final use will be but it will be a nice surprise.

So anyone in?

If so how about some guidelines as just letting it all run wild with out some way of organising it would just make a mess.

Hmm so lets see

1: Only 1 person at a time modifying the file as more then one person would make it hard to see which file to carry on with.

2: Because the Darkbasic community has so many different levels of skill let say we let the beginners start then let the skill level increase the further a long we go. This is to make sure that the beginners don’t accidentally ruin a good bit of work someone spent a long time on also it means that everyone’s input is used to the fullest it can be. Btw just because some people might not be that good with modelling doesn't mean that their input is unwanted, even the smallest change can improve the model a lot.

3: Don't add or modify just for the sake of it for example if the model starts to have a streamlined look don’t plonk a brick on its side just to be different or to make the model incredibly small or large.

4: Don't delete other peoples modifications with out good reason use them, modify them but don't delete like the person never contributed at all.

5: If you say you next on the board to modify don’t let everyone be hanging, only say your going to modify when you are actually going to do it no that your going to dl the file and mod it in a few hours let someone else work on it till the time your ready.

6: Max time for a modification is 24 hours if it’s not back in that time someone else should go ahead, this is to stop stagnation.

7: Any modification is welcome even if it’s just to reduce poly size.

8: Max poly size is 10K; trust me it is not too much or too little.

9: Time limit for whole model is 1 week or less.

10: Keep the model in the same format all the time.

11: Don’t add any 3d program dependent stuff like bones or lights or materials all we are interested in is the raw model data.

12: When the model is finished we can then see if it needs to be boned or animated, if so then we start boning and animating it right there not in the middle of making the model.

13: The model should be kept in a zip file called 1.zip when the next person if finished it should be renamed 2.zip and so on. Also in side the zip should be model.x or model.3ds or what ever the format is also included is something like Modders.txt with a list of al the people who as modified the model - for example on the top line "EvilJayson - 1 - 18/6/2004" and on the next line "John Doe - 2 - 19/6/2004 and so on.

Wooo well that all I can think of so far.

So does anyone want to try it?

If so I’ll post the first primitive model tomorrow or if anyone else wants to do it what we need is a sphere but not a simple one quite complex just to give people something to work with.

Hmm btw what format should we use? Any good universal ones?

Also is there any place where we can post the file to with out needing to register or login to? We won’t need more then 1 meg as the file is only model data and a text file.

So if anyone’s interested or has any other suggestions post them.
