I want to make vehicle objects look dead and burnt out after they have been destroyed without having to replace them with another 'dead-looking' object.

Is it possible to dynamically re-texture or re-colour objects that have been loaded in .x format? Just using texture object or color object just seems to either colour a part of the object plain white, or do nothing. I'm not thinking of anything very clever here for retexturing (in terms of UV mapping), just a blanket smoky black texture or something. In other words the same effect you would get if you loaded a non-textured object and ran TEXTURE OBJECT.

try re-painting the texture then just use the texture command to apply it to the object

With .X models you can use set object texture and texture object commands to apply a new texture image. The kicker is that you have to do some planning here. If you build a model that loads multiple textures, you'll not get the results expected. But, if your original model uses a single texture 'skin' you can replace that with a 'damaged skin' and the UV coordinates will do the rest.

In a nutshell, skinned models are OK. Multi-textured models might have problems with all the old textures being assigned to the same new texture image. Clear as mud?
