Hiya, I just put my newest 2d game in the code base "Saddam's Army".
Its sort of like Space Invaders but instead its a person with dual pistols trying to hold off "Saddam's Army". If you would like to play it go to code base or download it off my website (click the web button at end of post).
Also plz leave me some feed back on how I can make the game more fun and how I can make the code better.

I'll start by saying that you will probably get more feedback if you get some webspace on freewebs, tripoc, geocities, dbspot, one of those places and offer a download of your game.

As for the game it's a nice start, the guys don't look too shabby, and although "space invaders remake" is the underlying feeling you make it fresh by just making on giant sandbag pile for protection and giving the guys rifles and turbans. Your next big focus should be on sound effects and music.

Just edit the source. Where it says Ammo= put whatever you want. I made it so at the beginning you can chose easy, medium, or hard. I also increased the character's speed.

I replied in the DBC thread. Just in case you are only checking back here i copied my post and added more comments...

Skeletor,

It's a decent start. And I hope that you will build on this, because it's just not that fun to play at this point. But I think with some work it could be. Here are some of the things that I think need to be addressed.

1 - I'm not sure of the speed that it plays on your computer, but on mine you would have to be Flash Gordon, to dodge the enemies bullets. Especially Saddams fire-ball. Plus his shot comes from his left side, I wound up with him to the left of my charcter and there was no way for me to get a shot in without being killed. (Also at some point I wasn't able to reaload anymore, so I was left with no choice but suicide )
2 - There isn't a feel of strategy. The enemies firing feels completely random. It would be better if they grouped, moved and shot in patterns. This way I could plan a strategy and actually get good at the game, instead of feeling like it's random luck or unluck.
3 - You need some power-ups.
4 - There really needs to be more of a game here. More media, animations, levels, enemies, weapons.
5 - Add some other elements. like: perhaps the big sandbag takes damage, and to build it up re-enforcements hand out sand bags at the sides of the screen. By grabbing these and returnig back to the center, the player can repair the sandbag. Perhaps they also supply the you with grenades or (rocket-propelled-grenades)
6 - After some of these enhancements; if I were designing it, I would make the game more like Commando or Ikari warriors for the NES. Where the playe can move up and the screen scrolls. If you like i can try to get screenies of commando, and Ikari warriors for reference.
7 - Lose the two-gun stuff. It doesn't work well. Plus If I am behind the sandbag with one of the guns outside the barrier it's shot still gets blocked. Which I can understand because if you allowed it to fire, someone would be able to stand and shoot there all day. But to just have the bullet dissapear looks half-baked. Have one gone and center it. This way to soot at least part of the player as to be exposed to damage.
8 - Work on the sprites a little. Use some dithering to add shading. tone down the colors of the players. Add something to the bullets. Work on some particle FX.
9 - The color of the guns fade into the color of the road.

Pros: (There are good elements here)
1 - You took on a game that you can complete.
2 - Some nice music.
3 - Saddams big head was fun.
4 - More complete than the 5 or so projects I am stil working on.
5 - Smooth movement (no jerkyness)
6 - I liked the simplified backgrounds
7 - I liked that you can see if your gun has bullets
8 - good implementation of amo left meter
9 - Nice that you provided the source. More people should do this with their game demos.
10 - What you have decided to implement so far, works. I didn't notice many glitches like abilty to move to spots you shouldn't, collisions seemed to work right.

Oh yeah, and when you kill a taliban, you get money. After every level you get to spend it. You can buy extra sandbags or weapons or ammo. And if you buy a sandbag you can use it whenever you want in the next level, like if you press a certain button, a transparent sandbag appears in front of you and you walk side to side until you decide where the right place to put it would be, press another button and it becomes solid and non-transparent and in the spot you chose. Also, you can only buy a certain amount of sandbags. To many would be like cheating.

lol @ sidewkdik

I really dont care about people using my source. And I know I should add more stuff to my game but truthfully im really still new to Darkbasic and want to experiment with different types of games instead of creating a huge project right off the bat. If you guys out there want to add all that stuff to the game feel free too. email me the results or post them here.

On second thought, I will just tell you right here right now. At the beginning, I did this.

INPUT "Set Difficulty",difficulty$
if difficulty$="easy"
lifes=6
Ammo=6
endif
if difficulty$="normal"
lifes=4
Ammo=4
endif
if difficulty$="hard"
lifes=2
Ammo=2
endif
if difficulty$<>"easy" and difficulty$<>"normal" and difficulty$<>"hard"
lifes=3
Ammo=3
endif

And just for fun I increased the character's speed, lowered Sadaam's speed, and increased the bullet's speed.

Guhill The Anti Hate,
I see you are making a 2d game named Gun Guy. I just wanted to let you know that if you want to use anything like the ammo meter from Saddam's Army or use any other elements from my game go right ahead (That is assuming "Gun Guy" is a shooter game lol)

Also when you complete your game email it to me or post it on code base or your website so I can play it.

@Skeletor

Latest Update on Gun Guy: Project terminated

I'm starting a new 2d game called Perfect Warfare. You're a miniature warrior who fights monsters, but it's inside my room. So the monsters are flies and spiders and ants and stuff, I'm currently planning the game on paper, I sorta rushed into Gun Guy blindly, I figure if I plan a game and take my time the game wont turn into a huge messy slop of useless code. But when I finish the first level of it I'll email it to you.
