Virtually anything is better than my current sis "video card", but I wanted to know about your experience with this Radeon 9000 Mb...

Thanks

its better than the sis - i've got one - works fine although i don't do too much graphical work - need to get omega drivers rather than manufacturers and is pretty decent for a laptop chip although there are better chips out there.

I've got one, works pretty well under Linux for 3D acceleration, plays the UT2004 demo fairly reasonably; ~1900fps with glxgears at 24bit (probably not much use to non-linux types). As far as Windows and DirectX are concerned I seem to remember it's DirectX 8.1 compliant with support for some shaders.

That's correct, I do get around 1900 frames per second with glxgears. It's a very simple benchmarking tool that displays three interlocked gears rotating. With just software rendering I can get around 300-400 frames per second.

I've got one in my laptop (FS-Amilo). It's pretty good but there are much better ones out now. I can run any game and dbpro works like a dream with it.

Beware that laptop manufacturers have a bad habit of never updating the graphics drivers and you can't simply download latest ones off ATI website as they won't install on laptops. To get around this, do like Karlos and either get Omega drivers or like me, download latest ATI drivers and 'Patje' patch them so they will install.

alledgedly the latest Omega drivers see a performance boost to all mobile chips.

Sounds promising - will give it a shot with StarWars Galaxies tonight see if my fps goes up a little.

Thanks for the replies, this laptop was kind of an “inevitable buy it’s not mine, but I’ll be able to program in it from time to time

And thanks for the tip on the drivers

Inevitable buys are anything Alienware or Falcon Rigs... everything else is second class

Performance wise, the Alienware Area-51 is not quite upto it. Always tend to be a good 10%+ worse than the best of the AJPs (D500E currently) or Rockdirects (Extreme). Personally also quite like the Voodoo (US though), and SavRow is looking quite nice (check out the custom made Swordfish desktop on their forum).

But you got to love those Alien Eyes! Very cool.

Then again, considering you ended that statement with a winking smilie then I take it you were taking the piss?

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing
