Hi. As some of you know, my AIM account was hacked about two weeks ago. I found out some freak gave me viruses that screws up my computer, makes my internet not work, freezes my computer, shuts it down at random times, steals my account passwords, etc. Anwyayz, i found out that all (of my programs so far that i saw) of my programs that connect to ports and such are connecting to bad ports (like port 5,000... For all of you who don't know what port 5000 is, its a virus port or something that gives you bad stuff). I think that virus did that. WOW, that must be a REALLY bad virus. It basicly makes you think your computer is broken and makes you wana go to the store and buy another one lol. It's the worst virus ive ever had and it does soooo many things. Anywayz, my question is... How to I stop those for conecting to all these bad ports. And also, i keep on getting viruses and bad stuff (WAY TO MUCH), i think its those ports. How to i stop this from happening? Thanks! P.S... the hackers back on my friends account... g2g!!

there is no such thing as a "bad port". Your pc communicates over any one of over 65000 virtual ports on the machine via TCP or UDP. There may be "bad progams" that are using port 5000 but that number was chosen by the hacker/programmer. I'd suggest you get yourself a good firewall. ZoneAlarm has a free one that is great.

heheh no offence but when you said 5000 being "a bad port" I just imagined this engineer programing the port system making this evil laugh and proclaiming to all that port 5000 was the port of evil. .... *cough*Well hmm back to programing...

Like I said, you really need to freshen up on your PC literacy before you bother tackling an illeged "hacker."

Thats what happens when you click "yes" to all the boxes that pop up, or download illegal music/software, or run you PC without a virus scanner. And if you don't update windows, your all the more a jucy random target for trojans that others just like you have. You proly did your share of sharing the virus. Its kinda funny actuially.. I had this one customer that had a trojan that logged its attempted spread IPs, so I was nice enough to tell her that the last computer she tried to infect was located in southern california.

http://www.digitalneo.net/rant.txt Read and learn (although keeping in mind this IS a rant, so is only half-serious). Also, i do use explicit language so the weary need not click the link

Yeah, I just love it when people go "OMGOMG HOW DID I GET A VIRUS".. Lets see, they don't even know what "Windows Update" is, don't have an antivirus, and have an awe-enspiring collection of songs, screensavers, and movies. I mean seriously, is my computer knowledge making me see things wrong, or are these people just stupid?

Skier: http://www.symantec.com/
Get norton 2004. Unless your on Windows98, which, as stated in the rant, is COMPLETLY unsupported by anything now. If your on 98, you must get norton 2003, which is becomming quite useless.

Quote: " For all of you who don't know what port 5000 is, its a virus port or something that gives you bad stuff)."

Are you serious? Man.. and I thought port 5000 was the antivirus port >.<, that would explain all the viruses i've been getting! (closes the port).

Quote: "I think that virus did that. WOW, that must be a REALLY bad virus. It basicly makes you think your computer is broken and makes you wana go to the store and buy another one lol."

No, it makes ~you~ think your computer is broken. When really, its the Operating System that is broken. And you are correct, you need to go buy a new PC every time you get a trojan.. Or, spend $40 on antivirus software.. but hey, your choice!

Quote: " How to I stop those for conecting to all these bad ports. And also, i keep on getting viruses and bad stuff (WAY TO MUCH), i think its those ports. How to i stop this from happening? "

Follow my variable-step plan to virus-free computing!:

1] STOP DOWNLOADING ILLEGAL MUSIC/APPS AND PORN
2] Buy antivirus software (norton 2004) (or 2003 for win9x/me)
3] Stop clicking on 'Yes' or 'Agree' without taking the time to read what you are agreeing to.
4] Message boxes titled "Microsoft Internet Explorer" are ADS, f@#$ing close them, don't click them.
5] Update Windows (IE->Tools->Windows Updates) No ammount of antivirus protection will help you if you don't do this.
6] DONT USE INTERNET EXPLORER!!! Using internet explorer to actuially surf the web is the worst thing you can possibly do to windows. Windows is tightly integrated with IE, and the web is very nasty, so who in their right mind would dip their OS into a pool of viruses, adware, spyware, malware, etc? "What?! 'Another web browser?!'" you say? Yes.. Mozilla, Firefox, Operah, Netscape, etc. Believe it or not, microsoft does not create the world's only web browser, nor is IE any good at all (infact it rather sucks).

My two cents..

basically you're on to something but let's make few things clear:
Quote: "1] STOP DOWNLOADING ILLEGAL MUSIC/APPS AND PORN"

something like tv-episodes can be considered illegal - but you won't get virii from those. The bigger threat comes from the sites - especially pr0n sites and not the downloads themselves. At least if you have ANY brains.

Quote: "6] DONT USE INTERNET EXPLORER!!! "

Been using IE for 4 years and not a single virii has come through it. And it doesn't suck as nearly as much as people tell you. That is, if you have the computer set up right. Of course if you have viruses on your computer already, using IE isn't that wise.

in my opinion, the most important thing is the Firewall. You'll need a good one before even trying to connect to net. After that, MS updates are the next thing - then some common sense. If you want to play it safe, get an antivirus software. I had NO active antivirus software for two years and had no viruses at all. (and yes, I was fairly often online) - now I'm currently testing F-secure, but if I'd have a working alternative firewall, I'd uninstall it because like many other antivirus software, it slows things down.

ok... first of all.. "STOP DOWNLOADING ILLEGAL MUSIC/APPS AND PORN"
I dont download that stuff. Lets jsut make that clear Second, i mostly use AOL now. Third, i just did a windows update. Fourth, i have Windows XP. Fith,(not to brag. But jsut to let u know) i have one of the best virus scanning tools (well, its EXTREALY GOOD, thats all i know... WAY better then Norton. It picked up viruses that norton didnt with the one i use (used to use Norton)). And most of all.. im not kidding about this. Really, my computer used to shut down at reandom times, connect to porn sites (i didnt connect, the virus did... wanted to make that clear), block my IE and AOL and AIM, etc. I researched the virus i had (i had about 17 AIM viruses, 8 Trojans called something like .byteVerifyer (which is a high risk secrity hole), and 1 backdoor. So u all dont gota make fun of me... This aint a joke.

P.S. I WAS KIDDING ABOUT THE SOTRE THING! u dont gota all team up on me and flame me.

P.S. 2 Jeku, lol.. yah, i was jsut kidding about the sotre thing. I ment it like the virus is so bad, it makes u wana give up on your computer (if u know what i mean).

GRRRRRRRRRRR. THis is the last time i get help around here. if all u do is flame people, then thats fine with me. Im just not gona ask questions and expect not to get flamed then. So, thnx for nothing!!!

"Like I said, you really need to freshen up on your PC literacy before you bother tackling an illeged "hacker."".. Well, i think i know enough to get this guy... I know a lot about computers. Sorry, im not very good at typeing (i type way to fast, cauing me to mess up)... So i may screw up on what im trying to say

Err...what exactly are you talking about? This is a public forum; you don't even have to own DarkBASIC to post here. I fail to see the relation between you buying DBPro and you posting on these forums.

And we weren't "flaming" you (well, most of us weren't), we're just trying to tell you that based on the way you talk about computers, you don't really know a lot about them. Maybe you should call a PC Tech guy and have him look at your computer or something.

you didn't get flamed, you got "kidded around with" - there is a difference. People have provided some useful info here for you. Live, learn, move on.

Don't persist by acting like a child after the fact - that will surely get you the flames you are so overly concerned with.

Good Luck

@skier demon: you don`t have an antivirus worth a thing if you are infected, your wonderful AV may well be malware for all we know and installing virii, it didn`t stop you getting infected...did it?, so it`s obviously worthless, delete it and get one that works.
Install a firewall or turn the firewall on in XP after killing all the virii and infected files, the XP firewall is not that hot, but it`s better than nothing, and it locks all the unused ports on your system and will warn you if anyone tries to open one.
keep your system fully updated, it`s a pain downloading some of the larger patches, but it`s more of a pain when your PC doesn`t work, those patches (ALL of them) are released for a reason, that reason is to keep your PC secure and stable.
I have NEVER had any porn or warez site get into my system, why?, because I don`t visit such sites, don`t answer e-mails from strangers or even open them, and never click on anything but the close button on popups, any time you allow something to redirect or open on your machine then you are open to malicous exploits and trojans.
if you want a secure system then NEVER run netmeeting or any other instant communications device, the MS offering in particular opens channels directly into the heart of your system that a malicious user can exploit to infect or steal information (like passwords) off you, if you must use em then use a realtime monitor to secure the connection and watch for trouble.
that should be some help, remember, the antivirus you have is useless since you got infected and it didn`t stop it, so get rid of it and either buy one or download AVG or antivir and scan your system, and turn on the firewall, it isn`t on by default in XP for some weird reason MS think you don`t need it even though they included it , turn it on.
hope that helps you to clear your system and stop the hackers, cheers.

Mentor.

Thanks. Thats odd... My apps open ports without my firewall letting me know. I use the one what came with XP, but it doesnt seem to work :/ My anti-virus works (it found viruses) and i deleted them. My AIM account doesnt get hacked and now this whole problem is over. But i was jsut wondering y almost all my programs are conencting to these tpyes of ports. I looked on the main port site and found that port 5000 and some other ports i am conencting to give you viruses and are bad.

Thanks again. Just got webroot spysearcher and found some keylogging software *sigh*.

But the virus came from somewhere. You *obviously* opened some sort of executable or went to a site that had some freaky activeX control that stuck spyware/itself/virus/whatever onto your computer. Virus' don't just appear if you're running a proper firewall, a proper virus scanner, and a proper browser (e.g. Firefox).

The last time I got a virus was Win95.CIH back in '99 because I was transferring files from my artschool's hard drive onto floppy disk and bringing them home to my comp with an old virus scanner. They can be transferred as easy as that, my friend.

Good luck.

Might I also suggest, in addition to the wonderful advice given to you, that you sever your hands in order to STOP TYPING CRAP.

Again, you don't have to browse OR download to get viruses. And if your virus scanner is so amazing, then how did the trojan get through huh? I use norton 9 corperate (legal copy believe it or not) and I reguarly get viri warnings here and there, mainly from tmp files, but have never had a single virus infection since i installed it.

I'm smarter than you. Any retaliation to this statement further proves my point.

If you dont share printers or files by using your lan, then disable "file and printer sharing" and dont share your hd's. Some nasty viruses can get past your scanners this way. If you use your lan, then use passwords for access.
