You think your an all-that-and-a-bag-of-chips Composer? You beats are phatter than everyone elses? Dropped more block rockin' beats than a Champion Beetroot Farmer?

Well then, I have a little challenge for you.
Want to know the name of the game?

Simple
Rule -> Create a tune that must be between 2-5minutes;
Rule -> The style of your track can be anything, but it must feel like it is an epic tune. So something that gives the sense of something big about to happen or happening;
Rule -> No Vocals, Unless they accompany the music harmonically;
(ie, no rappin' , no spliced quote, no talking, this is more about the music and the atmosphere of it)
Rule -> You must have 2 Sections, a Slow Section and a Fast Section. The order of which comes where or how often is upto you, but they must have distinct areas with it being slow and fast;

Oh but how can you create a track without a subject?
Well your subject is going to be interesting...
Two duelists about to fight: to set the atmosphere i've uploaded a picture of the area you can image they're about to fight in.

... So why do the challenge?
Well I suppose giving some prize would be cool, but I don't have one right now. So I suppose it'll just be for a made up title like
'Leet Music God 2004'

I'll try to find a better prize, dunno; like some Yamaha synth gear or Roland MPU. Really I want this to be all about the Music.
There are enough rules and information to give you a set subject but with no bars on styles means you can really experiment

Closing Date :: 1st August 2004

I should point this out to Daz and Grim. That picture reminds me of a tech demo I did in dbc a long time ago.
I've been meaning to write something for awhile, maybe this'll get me started again.

I might put some of my music up. I've always wanted to post my old stuff, but it's on tape, and it's not really very good. What's the best way to get it from tape to computer?

Depends on the connection type your stereo has;
Simplest method i know of (which i used for recording tapes/LPs from my stereo system) is to get an old set of headphones, clip the wire from it with most of it still left, strip the ends of the wires and hook directly into the LR connections.
Most systems now work on a clip system so you can use exposed wires, then just plug into your Mic jack in your sound card.

That said i've also got a CDR on my system hehee so i don't have to do that no more :: hugs his Sony hi-fi ::

should be good i've got some guys over at a Remix site who wanna join in too. I know we have alot of guys around here in the woodwork who do this stuff.

yup... i should really post up a disclaimer to the effect, all music is copyright(c) whenever-2004 the original creators; anyone feeling they can jack the music displayed and take that jack and stuff it where the sun don't shine to the fullest extend the law will allow

or something like that. hehee
someone else who does music can sit here and write a proper disclaimer, with all the legals and legits.

So is the gamespy image on your picture because you put it there, or because they actually covered the game you're working on... or did you take it from a different game because you don't want to reveal your own media yet?

No, that's his game, Mouse. He works for gamespy and wrote an article on it.

But this challenge is just awesome, Raven gets free music for his game and the winner gets nothing. WOooohooOOhO!

That roughly covers the thoughts crossing my mind . Well, at least they get the fame of appearing in a Raven game

Now would be a good time for me to show a little of my music ability, however I need to get a cable before I can tranfer anything on my computer (heh, Grim, do you have your Fantom yet )

Raven, please refrain from using this kind of "slang" again...
It just sounds so wrong...

hope the deadline holds

lol Todd reckons I should've waited a week, cause he wanted to make a track to set the bar.
It doesn't matter really, as i've stated all the copyrights stay; after all if they didn't count I would've written up some huge EULA and linked it saying you have to agree to that before joining in.

This is more for kicks than anything else
Really what alot of forums have lacked is a good music challenge for a long long time. I know there are gonna be a few users who are like 'Oh i don't like the sounds of this' ... but I can see if a composer thinks this is dodgy and doesn't wanna enter they'll just read the thread and move on.

Deadline is gonna hold fast, this is on 8 forums now aparently; i've personally done 2. Plan to do 2 more soon as well.

As for the image; obviously Mouse the image isn't mine, might be a GameSpy image (cause it's the one i liked) ... no i'm not going to say where it's from cause the last thing i want is 20-entries using that as a theme. All it has to do with is this Challenge, as it sets the mood for the work.

So basically what you're saying is that the prize is you begging the winner to let you use the music in your game.

Using the mic in as raven suggested might be a little loud

So which other forums hold this competition then?

Might be a bit unfair to chalelnge games programmers against a proper musicians site.

Forgive my scepticism - i like a good compo but I also like to know what i'm up against and the reasons.

The hint of prizes is a little unfair - some newer people might be disappointed when they don't get anything.

Also who is judging and how are they judging?

I'm a system tester by trade so cynicism is my way of life plus I've been on these boards for a fair while so feel I have to ask these questions.

sorry to be a pain - just the way i am

Pincho,
You could record using any sampling software, for example you might have a free sample editor with whatever CD burning software you have - Nero's wave editor is pretty good, but any will do. However, you will have to use the volume controls and go to the recording options so you can select Line-In as the input, you can sample from a lot of things on a PC, like a mic or CD, or even the mixed output from the card itself (I used that method to get wave export into VSD Tracker).

Convert to ogg or mp3

wav is raw uncompressed nonsense.

I can probably upload for a little while if you still need hosting

3.5meg wav is around 40 seconds audio (mono, 16bit 41kHz), so I guess he converted it to mp3 already.

Play Nice! Play Basic! Check it out. Now.

@Pincho,

A little trick I've heard about is to find a much larger WAV file and record over it. If you use a 10 minute WAV file then you have 10 minutes recording time

i tend to let it record 60secs then press record again, as it automatically adds 60seconds and continues to record; so you can setup the size before hand like that.

that said creating a blank 3-4minutes PCM Wav isn't too hard, just a case of setting up a header for it and padding with blank sound.
childs play really.

But you'd be better off getting something other than sound recorder. Obviously Sound Recorder is very basic, but it also has serious issues, such as not allowing you monitor clipping, or amplify without clipping etc. Basically, unless you record your sound super quiet, you're likely to distort it.
