i've placed some sprites (a tree) in a level by texturing a face with the texture of a tree and i've also added a transparanty map to this because a tree is never a nice square, but when i export my file to .3ds the texture of the tree is added to the face, but the transparanty is completly lost so a get a nice pink rectangle around the tree (if you get what i mean?)
is there a way to solve this one out, or do i need to program all this sprites in db? (hopefully not because i need a whole forest)

In DBV1 only black can disappear using "Set object"

I think DBpro can actually change it with "Set image colorkey"(not sure though)

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour!

I'm guessing by sprite u actually mean a flat 3d object. You could just make plains, then texture them, then use the black transparany to make them That said it doesn't quite work yet, a slight compatibility bug that sometimes leaves an outline - but that should b fixed soon I hope
