'Visual' refers to the form editor (since u can create GUI without needing to code anything), or so thats what I heard.

Yes, that's one thing I don't like about DarkBasic--- the damn dark background. It is next to impossible to create a game that takes place in the day. The MakeDark() function is pretty cool, but they definitely need a MakeDay() function as well.

DarkBASIC was the first BASIC. After that a competitor BlitzBASIC cropped up but it was unpopular because it sucked. Then DarkBASIC Professional came out. There's also Pure BASIC Play BASIC and Curved BASIC in development. That's all.

I've always liked C64 BASIC myself - yes, it didn't have any native commands for graphics or sounds (or even structured programming), but it did mean that using graphics, sound and sprites in assembler was so much easier.

BBC BASIC V was also good (the BASIC version in the Archimedies). Never really used BASIC on the BBC B machines - couldn't stand the line editor.

Amstrad BASIC was okay-ish (slow though). Never tried Spectrum BASIC (although it looked a real pain to type in).

Blitz BASIC on the Amiga was buggy (and not much good).

Ach, you never tried the 128k version then. Although shame, the 48k version was like speed typing once you got used to the one key for each command system. Top stuff. Ah. K was load wasn't it? Heh. And you had to play finger twister to access the green and red commands. Heh heh... fond memories... and twisted fingers...

My most used basic though (apart from work), has to be STOS. Many a day was lost using that language. And it was what I used in my free time at uni. So yep, I used it a *lot*. Well, as much as can be expected when 95% of the day was blury. Good olde uni... oh, and STOS was super cool once you had the compiler, and 3D module too. Great stuff.

Hmmm, but the most interesting has to be Puma basic. If you have used that one then you will know there is stuff that DB will never be able to do. That is *likely* to do. As I can never see it happening....

I think Blitz Basic was ported to Windows as the "Legendary Amiga Compiler"

I disliked STOS, seemed far too cumbersome, the add-ons that came later improved matters, but IMO the only basic on the AtariST worth it's salt was GFA Basic, then with Sprite Works add-on, it totally mocked STOS. I mean interrupt driven tracker music, hardware scrolling, copper-bars, pallete switching, and all in basic!. I just wish I'd gotten Sprite Works much sooner instead of leaving it until developing on the ST was fairly fruitless.

For me, my 3 killer apps would have to be Spectrum BASIC, SEUCK on the C64, and GFA on the ST. I'd happily go back to those days if I could.

I remember Blitz Basic on the Amiga, it had that game with a bunch of Minis racing around a track. That was very impressive! I prefered AMOS though.

i dont know if any of you have a palm os pda but after i got my palm for christmas last year i a was at tucows and found palm basic it's a very basic version but does draw (followed by a shape ) and rnd# commands and input. This is where i first got any experince with basic.

I first started programming in QBasic when I was 8 or so. I mostly made bad text adventure games and went from structured programming in it to line numbers for every line and gotos. Interesting fact, the BUILD engine that Duke Nukem 3D used was first writen in QBasic. We actually still use QuickBasic (QuickBasic being the compiled version of QBasic) at my work sometimes for DOS programming. It's funny, if you run it in XP it gives a warning message saying that you need to use a Microsoft OS or it won't run as well (which was a blatant lie, they just wanted to scare people away from other DOSes). Oh and Dazzag I actually still have VisualBasic for DOS on my computer but never really use it much (for those who don't remeber, Microsoft released VB for DOS and Windows at the same time and used it to make developers switch over to Windows with the next version).
