Hey,

I'm working on making a project based on fractal landscapes in DBPro. I was wondering if anyone had attempted this yet and had any pointers.

Do you mean destructable landscapes (like in Red Faction). That would be cool!

I'm not sure how you would go about it without it looking bad, or using too many polies.

That's just a first impression.

No, fractal landscapes are where the heightmap of the terrain are determined using fractals. Gives you a good mountainous range

I think VanB's stoked used fractals to generate his downhill racer, stoked. If I'm not mistaken he released the source too... although I can't seem to find a working version of his homepage

Search for stoked in the wip/prog announcements.

Cool, I'll go check that out when I get home from work! I know he released the full source, although he said it wasn't pretty. I think I have the concepts of fractal terains down, but implementing them, especially in a game, seems daunting. Anything that I can use as a jump start would really be appreciated. Thanks adr!

Download Fractint, generate plasma fractal, save copy of fractal and rotate 270, and use new advance terrain gen. Use first bitmap for height map and rotate on for texture map.

The fractally bit in Stoked is quite straightforward, makes a basic hill from randomised hotspots, then draw tracks on the terrain. I did make a standalone bit of code just to make the terrain data up - will post when I get home - IIRC it even draws a nice picture of it!.

My website is gone tata until I can find the time to organise a new one.
