Hey there,

I've had a bit 'o free time lately so I've finished two projects! unfortuantly not DB ones, but, all the same I think they're great. The first is a server/client model for chatting (booorrring) but the second is - Kompressor.

Kompressor is my compression program, it has 9 possible levels of compression, and IT BEATS WINZIP!

Here's some proof;

(Compressed: 18.0KB .fla file)



Yes the image has been edited slighty, but all I have done is copied and pasted the winzip filesize in - thats it (oh yeah and added the cool arrows).

On a more serious note, I'd like to know what features you'd like too see A) to make it a great program to use and B) to give me something to do

Maybe you should test it against Rar. Rar beats winzip.

Ah well it's still a good compressor (even though its got a crappy title, is it ironic that it makes things smaller and has a big (long) name o_0 ?).

Anyone have some features in mind? It'll keep me busy during the hols

How about making it winzip compatible?

Seriously though, all the standard things, such as self-extraction, replacing files within the archive, and even an interface to read a file from the archive without extracting to file.

Hehe gotta wait until tommorrow I'm afriad I left the source on my work experience PC. I was hoping my mate would come online (as I sent him a copy) but unfortuantly he hasn't.

Okey dokey, will do.

One of the main problems is the interface, all nice buttons and such but its not 100% straightforward, that'll be the first major change I've gotta make.

try WinZip9 and it's new Maximum Compression method.
compresses very small

GZip / BZip2
7Zip
Rar
Lzh
Lha
WinZip

those are really the main zip types... most are smaller than Winzip; this said, Zip is one of the most portable, and widely supported.
Everyone knows there are better variations out there;
but you know that everyone can unpack a Zip file, the other formats your not sure about.

This said for Linux GZip and Unix BZip2 those formats are most common, infact used inline for applications.So this then adds that it is also platform dependancy.

Oh yeah, before I go you MUST remember to include the .pak extention when you create an archive, this .exe doesn't add it automatically.

The best compresser is WinRAR, it can open like any type of archive, repair dead archives, make rar, and zip archives, and more!

We must get rid of COunt olof, help me waste him. The eye of Olaf is on his ankle, and hehas a unibrow, shiny eyes, dirty, and want to get the Baudelaire fortune!!!!!!!!!!!@

Wrong, the best compressor has proven to be 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/). Beats others hands down, although it's pretty slow as creating the archive in the first place. It also supports RAR and ZIP files.

if u make it compatible with winzip, the files will have to be the same format and size as if you'd used winzip. That would put you at a disadvantage because winzip is a better known program - you'd lose your main advantage

Am I the only one here who's really confused?
