Im trying to color the verts of a model in 3ds max 5, save the model as a .x (via panda), and get the colors to display inside db. Problem is, im not sure what step im screwing up on, so I have no idea why every model is NOT loading vert colors. Heres what im doing maybe you can spot my error...

Make a basic cube in max. Apply a VertexPaint modifier. Color the verts with different random colors. Now the model displays the vert colors in the perspective view, but NOT when I do a quick render (when I render the cube it just displays its solid base color). Im assuming because the vert colors are being displayed in perxpective view, they are infact colored, so I go to save... Export the model as .x using panda 4.3.0.47. The 'vertex colors' box is checked. Load the x into dbpro, and all I get is a solid color object (color seems to be the same as the base color from max).

What the heck?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Try loading as a mesh then creating an object from it - loading the mesh loads the vert colours aparantly, but means you'd have to load and apply a texture too - so it's not ideal in the least because if it's a level object, you may have more than 1 texture.

Froggermon and ESC got it working with their Roswell Racer game, that used vert lightmaps made in 3DSMax, maybe they could help.

Hmm well on closer inspection loading the x as a mesh DOES import vert colors, but NOT alpha. So perhaps im setting the alpha wrong in max? Using the vertexpaint modifier im checking the 'alpha' box in the 'effect channels' area. I then set 'alpha' to a value of 0 and paint along one edge of my plain. Now this is the odd part, while the COLORS display in the perspective view, the transparency/alpha does NOT. However, when I use the color picker to check the colors of the plain, it DOES display the alpha values as I scroll along the object, implying they ARE there (you can see the alpha NUMBERS change as you check go from one edge to the other).

But like I said, when I load the mesh into dbpro all I see are the colors... Akk! And yes im remembering to set tranparancy on in dbpro.

*edit im also in 32 bit color mode. I heard that screws with transparency otherwise.

The thing is, alpha is a component of 32-bit colour, so an alpha of 0 would be solid - and alpha of 255 would be transparent, try 128 and see how it looks.

MAx only lets you set the alpha range between 0 and 100. So im assuming its smart enough to know that 100.0 should really be 255.0.

Are you sure frogger got vert alpha to import DIRECTLY from max? Or did they have to use some workaround?

I know they used a workaround, but the code is not public domain, they had to pay for it IIRC - it is some really complex .X loading stuff that is pretty damn scary (and I'm writing a modeller!).
